ENVIRONMENTAL

EDUCATION and
ENVIRONMENT FOR
SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT
Annie B. Agpoon
Environmental Education
“A process by which individuals become acquainted
with their surroundings, gaining the essential
knowledge, skills, attitudes, experiences, and motivation
to engage — both individually and collectively — in
caring for present and future environmental challenges.”

“A process that allows people to learn about

environmental issues, solve problems, and take action
to help the environment. As a result, people have a
better grasp of environmental challenges and the ability
to make educated and responsible decisions.”

Education for
Sustainable Development
ESD provides learners of all ages with the
knowledge, skills, attitudes, and agency to
confront linked global concerns such as climate
change, biodiversity loss, unsustainable resource
use, and inequality. It equips students of all ages
to make educated decisions and to take individual
and communal action to alter society and care for
the environment.
UNESCO’s work on ESD focuses on five main areas

Advancing policy

Transforming learning
environments

Building capacities of
educators

Empowering and
mobilizing youth

Accelerating local
level action
UNESCO assists nations in developing and
expanding educational programs that focus on
sustainability issues such as climate change,
biodiversity, disaster risk reduction, water,
the oceans, sustainable urbanization, and
sustainable lifestyles.
