ENGLISH UPGRADING PROGRAM 2011

YEAR 4 UKM
RATIONAL
This programme is prepared with an aim to prepare pupils towards

progressive achievement in the English Language. This programme
also aims to prepare pupils to achieve a better percentage of passes in
their Monthly and Semester Examination of the Year 2011.
This is expected not only to enable pupils to attain better passing
level but it also meant to equip pupils with the ability to use and
communicate effectively in all the integrated skills required of them by
the National Education Policy. The policy heightens the need for
English to be taught as an affective second language in Malaysia.
AIMS
1. To equip pupils with the basic listening, speaking, reading and
writing skills.
2. To cultivate the pupils’ interest and develop a positive
attitude towards the learning of English.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this programme:
1. To reinforce pupils’ interest in learning the language and
enabling them to acquire a better position in their current levels
of proficiency and understanding of the language.
2. To develop students’ competency in the language and unsure
optimum understanding in order to meet the criteria in the UPSR
English Syllabus.
3. To develop pupils’ confidence in the techniques of answering
examination questions in order to achieve better results.
The specific objectives are :
YEAR 4 UKM
1. Comprehension
To enable students to read and comrehand texts to a higher
level of understanding which they will enjoy, so as to improve their
vocabulary and their general knowledge.
2. Compositions
Pupils should be able to understand the situations required to
compose essays using correct punctuation, vocabulary and
correct structures.
3. Grammar
Pupils should be able to attain a linguistic competence in the
grammatical aspects of the language that will enable them to use
the rules, both to communicate and write the language correctly.
4. Reading
Pupils should be able to read extensively and make sense of
what is being read with a purpose.
5. Social Expressions
Pupils should be able to read, listen and write oral / written
instructions within a given context, in order to give an
appropriate response to the task given correctly.
PROBLEMS FACED
1. Pupils are weak in vocabulary due to lack of usage of English.
2. Failure to communicate due to lack of self- confidence
3. Lack of interest in reading English books.
4. Lack of parental encouragement and guidance.
5. Mother tongue interference.
6. Inability to follow simple instructions.
7. Pessimistic towards the recognition of the importance of English
as the International language.

PLANS AND RESOURCES
WORKSHEETS
Pupils of Year 4 UKM will be given worksheets from time to time so
as to enable them to practice the skills taught in classroom and as
follow up activity to reinforce their understanding.
READING CORNER / SAL

Reading corner will be installed in the classroom to enable pupils to
keep themselves occupied with a knowledge environment. Pupils
also will be able to read in the library at the SAL Corner.
A HOMEWORK A DAY
YEAR 4 UKM
Pupils will be equipped with homework daily in order to keep them

occupied with their studies at home and to reinforce their
understanding of the language skills taught in the classroom.
VOCABULARY DRILL
Vocabulary drill will be conducted daily to familiarize with new
English words as well as to widen their vocabulary.
UPSR FORMAT SERIES

Pupils of Year 4 UKM will be trained to practice the UPSR format
series comprising of questions on comprehension, text completion,
social expression, information transfer and note expansion.
SENTENCE CONSTRUCTION
Exercises on sentence construction will be given twice a week as to
enable pupils to attain competency in constructing sentences
correctly based on the ideas they have in mind.
GRAMMAR SERIES
Grammar series will be included in their lessons once a week so as
to allow them to be proficient in the use of grammatical aspects of
the language.
SPELLING AND DICTATION

Pupils will be given a list of words and set of sentences to learn up
every week. They will be given spelling and dictation based on the
information.
WORK GROUPS
YEAR 4 UKM
Pupils will be divided into small groups according to their abilities.

They will be given activities to be done in groups. This will help the
pupils to enhance their communication skill.
SENTENCE DRILL
Sentence pattern drill will be carried out daily to enable students to
identify the sentence structures of the English Language.
LANGUAGE SONGS
Language songs are included to enhance the learning process and
to make it more interesting.
PLBS
Pupils will be given reading material to read and understand the
content of their reading. The pupils also will be given a few
questions and they will answer it orally. This is to enhance their
reading skills and their communication skills.It also will develop
their ideas during this session.
INTERACTIVE SOFTWARE
Teacher will apply the suitable interactive software related to the
lessons to arouse pupils attention to the lessons. This might also
give interest to the pupils to learn English Language.
