If you have decided to be a doctor or an engineer, it's easy to get information about how to become
one. It's more difficult if you want to be an actor. Nobody can say, "First you do this, then you do that, and
one day you're an actor". But I can tell you some things that will help.
Learning to be an actor usually starts at school. Drama lessons and clubs can teach students many
things, including different ways of acting and how to write their own plays. Writing helps you understand a
lot about acting. But even more important is learning to work in a group with other actors.
However, school lessons and clubs are only one part of learning about being an actor. Find small
theatre groups near where you live - and don't worry about being the star! It doesn't matter if you only have
one word to say in a play, it will still help you improve. You need to be on stage as much as possible, in a
variety of different types of plays. When you finish school, you should think about studying at university.
Of course, it's possible to be an actor without going to university, but doing a theatre course is a good idea
for some people. These courses may improve your acting, and also help you learn about a variety of
subjects, such as business, history, music and dance.

Solar energy is a long lasting source of energy which can be used almost anywhere. To generate solar energy, we only
need solar cells and the sun! Solar cells can easily be installed on house roofs, so no new space is needed and each user can
quietly generate their own energy. Compared to other renewable sources, they also possess many advantages. Wind and
water power rely on turbines which are noisy, expensive and easy to break down. Solar cells are totally silent and non-
polluting. As they have no moving parts, they require little maintenance and have a long lifetime.
However, solar energy also has some disadvantages. We can only generate solar energy during daytime because the
system depends on sunlight. Besides, solar cells require large area to work effectively. The main disadvantage of solar
energy is that it costs about twice as much as traditional sources such as coal, oil, and gas. This is because solar cells are

Part V. Read the passage and choose the correct answer A, B, C or D for each of the following questions.
Write your answers on the answer sheet.
Tsunamis, whose name derives from the Japanese expression for ‘high wave in a harbor’, are giant sea waves.
These waves are quite different from storm surges. They are also referred to by the general public as tidal waves
although they have nothing to do with tides. Scientists often refer to them as seismic sea waves, which is far
more appropriate because they are often the result of undersea seismic activity.
Tsunamis can be caused when the sea floor suddenly moves, during an underwater earthquake or
volcano, and the water above the moving earth is suddenly displaced. This sudden shift of water sets off a series
of waves. These waves can travel great distances, at speeds close to 700 kilometers per hour. In the open ocean,
tsunami waves are not very high, often no more than one or two meters. It is when they hit the shallow waters
near the coast that they increase in height, possibly up to 40 meters.

Did you ever wonder why it is so difficult for adults to start to learn English or a foreign language?
Every year, millions of grown-ups around the world spend a large amount of money on learning English but not

In the earliest times children got their education directly from parents and other adults. They learned mainly
skills for survival. Adults passed down this knowledge through spoken language. Eventually cultures around the
world began inventing writing. As societies developed they set up schools to teach reading, writing, maths and
other subjects.
The first schools were usually just for boys. Most of the students came from rich and powerful families. Often
the purpose of their education was religious training. In many cultures the religious leaders formed the highest
level of society. Some schools had other purposes as well. Many schools focused on military training.
Sometimes youths attended special schools to learn the art of public speaking. These skills were meant to help
them become future leaders.
Most girls received their education at home. They learned cooking, sewing and other useful skills. Over time
education became available to more people, not just the rich and powerful. The governments of some countries
set up public systems of education in the 1800s. More schools opened to girls.
During the 1900s marks, or grades, became a new measure of learning. Testing became a regular part of formal
education. As education became more important to people, teachers’ colleges opened. The requirements for
becoming a teacher became stricter. Teaching became a highly respected profession.

IV. Read the following passage, then choose the correct answer to questions.
Air pollution happens when wastes dirty the air. People reduce most of the wastes that cause air
pollution. Such wastes can be in the form of gases or particles of solid or liquid matter. These substances result
chiefly from burning fuel to power motor vehicles and to heating buildings. Industrial processes and the burning
of garbage also contribute to air pollution. Besides, there are other substances that naturally exist in the air. They
include dust, pollen, soil particles, and naturally occurring gases.
The rapid growth of population and industry and the increasing use of automobiles and airplanes have made
air pollution a serious problem. The air we breathe has become so filled with pollutants that can cause health
problems. It also harms plants, animals, building materials, and fabrics.
23.When does air pollution happens?

I. Read the following passage, then choose the correct answer to questions.
If you are invited to someone's house in America for dinner, you should bring a gift, such as a bunch of
flowers or a box of chocolates. If you give your host a wrapped gift, he or she may open it in front of you.
Opening a present in front of the gift-giver is considered polite. It shows that the host is excited about receiving
the gift and wants to show his or her appreciation to you immediately. Even if the host doesn't like it, he or she
will tell a "white lie" and say how much they like the gift to prevent the guest from feeling bad.
If your host asks you to arrive at a particular time, you should not arrive exactly on time or earlier than the
expected time, because this is considered to be potentially inconvenient and therefore rude, as the host may not
be ready.
