Slide 1: About India's Media & Entertainment Industry

The Media and Entertainment (M&E) sector in India is one of the most dynamic, contributing
around 1.7% to the nation's GDP. While Bollywood is a key player, regional industries make up
approximately 50% of the total domestic theatrical revenue. The regional markets, especially in
South Indian languages, continue to thrive, with growing contributions from Marathi, Punjabi,
and Gujarati content.

India is the largest film producer, creating over 1,700 films annually, and is home to more than
900 TV channels. With a digital surge, the country has over 700 million internet users and 538
million smartphones, enabling easy access to diverse content. The presence of 20+ OTT
platforms provides a significant opportunity for streaming and digital media.

Slide 2: Key Strengths of the Indian M&E Industry

 20+ Languages of Content: Reflecting India's rich cultural diversity and reaching a
broad audience.
 Land of Post-production Services: India offers cutting-edge technology and skilled
professionals for film editing, VFX, and sound design.
 Film Shooting Destination: With varied landscapes and production-friendly policies,
India attracts numerous domestic and international film projects.

These attributes collectively position India's M&E industry as a thriving sector, offering vast
opportunities for growth, innovation, and global collaboration.

Slide 3: Targeting South Indian Media Industries: A Strategic Opportunity

The South Indian media industry, encompassing the film sectors of Telugu (Tollywood), Tamil
(Kollywood), Malayalam (Mollywood), and Kannada (Sandalwood), has seen unprecedented
growth and transformation in recent years. In 2021, the Telugu film industry emerged as the
largest film industry in India by box office revenue. By 2022, South Indian cinemas collectively
outpaced Bollywood in revenue, with Telugu cinema accounting for 20%, Tamil for 14%,
Kannada for 5%, and Malayalam for 8% of the total Indian box office. This shift has solidified
South India’s position as a major player in the national entertainment sector.

A significant factor contributing to this success is the increasing collaboration between South
Indian actors, writers, and directors across different languages. Movies like Baahubali, KGF,
Lokesh Cinematic Universe, Jailer, Pushpa, RRR, Kalki 2898 AD, and Salaar have not only
achieved massive box office success but have also marked the emergence of a unified "Pan-
Indian" cinema. Additionally, this wave has opened doors for Hindi film actors to join South
Indian projects, thus expanding the audience base and encouraging creative synergies across
regions.

Slide 4: South Indian Cinema on the Global Stage & Growth Potential
South Indian cinema’s growing influence is evident on the global stage, where films and artists
have earned international acclaim. RRR won a Golden Globe and an Oscar for its hit song "Naatu
Naatu," while The Elephant Whisperers, a Tamil documentary, secured an Oscar for Best
Documentary Short. Notably, A. R. Rahman’s work, including Jai Ho (which originated from
Tamil-rooted music), has earned multiple Oscars and Grammy awards. These achievements
underline the technical prowess, storytelling quality, and international appeal of South Indian
productions.

With the rise of OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ Hotstar, South Indian
content has reached audiences far beyond India’s borders. Enhanced dubbing, subtitling, and
localization efforts have fueled a surge in demand for regional films and shows. As South India
continues to lead in VFX, CGI, and sound design, the region presents a wealth of opportunities
for investment, collaboration, and technological innovation. With government incentives, a
skilled workforce, and robust production infrastructure, targeting South Indian media industries
is a strategic move that offers the potential for growth, diversity, and global reach.
