NOTES: INVERSE FUNCTIONS

Day 2 – Quadratic and Square Root
Does the Function Have an Inverse?
Not every function has an inverse function. You can see in the example below, the inverse of the
function 𝒇 𝒙 = 𝒙𝟐 is 𝐲 = ± 𝒙. You can clearly see when the inverse relation is graphed that it
is not a function as it does not pass the Vertical Line Test.

Show Process:
𝒇 𝒙 = 𝒙𝟐 𝐲=± 𝒙
𝟐
𝒇 𝒙 =𝒙

We can use the _______________________________________ to determine if the inverse of a

function is a function or just a relation. If any horizontal line passes through more than one point
on the graph, the inverse is not a function.

If a function passes the Horizontal Line Test, it is said to be a _______________________ function,

where each y-value is paired with only one x-value.

Examples:
Use the horizontal line test to determine if each function’s inverse will be a function. Circle yes or no.

Domain Restrictions on the Original Function
We use domain ________________________ when the inverse of a function would normally not be
a function (the original function is not one-to-one).
DOMAIN RESTRICTION must be included on
4. Find the inverse of the following function: original function so inverse is a function

𝒇 𝒙 = 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟐, 𝒙 ≥ 𝟎

𝒇−𝟏

What is the domain and range of

the inverse function?

5. Find the inverse of the following function:

𝒇 𝒙 = (𝒙 + 𝟑)𝟐 +𝟐, 𝒙 ≤ −𝟑

Inverse Functions with Inherited Restrictions
When the original function has a restricted domain, the inverse function will inherit the restricted
domain so that it is a true inverse of the original. You must include any domain restriction in your
answer!

6. Find the inverse of the following function:

𝒇 𝒙 = 𝒙+𝟒

𝒇−𝟏

MUST LIMIT DOMAIN IN ANSWER SO THAT IT IS AN INVERSE OF THE ORIGINAL FUNCTION!

7. Find the inverse of the following function:

𝒇 𝒙 = − 𝟑𝒙 − 𝟔

MUST LIMIT DOMAIN IN ANSWER SO THAT IT IS AN INVERSE OF THE ORIGINAL FUNCTION!

Day 2 – Quadratic and Square Root
Find the inverse of each function algebraically. Include the domain in your answer, if necessary.

1. 𝒇 𝒙 = 𝒙𝟐 − 𝟓, 𝒙 ≥ 𝟎 2. 𝒇 𝒙 = 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟐, 𝒙 ≥ 𝟎

3. 𝒉 𝒙 = (𝒙 + 𝟏)𝟐 −𝟑, 𝒙 ≥ −𝟏 4. 𝒈 𝒙 = 𝟐(𝒙 − 𝟑)𝟐 , 𝒙 ≤ 𝟑
