Assignment 2: Descriptive Writing Draft 1

The Nature’s Labyrinth

In the centre of the expansive blue sky, the scintillating Sun could be
seen, casting majestic, blistering, effulgent rays over the rustling, verdant
canopy of nature’s labyrinth, the mangrove. As I sauntered towards the
place rooted in mystery, the mud of the brownish water wrapped around
my feet like a sticky blanket while the enigmatic atmosphere of the setting
left me as bewildered as a compass without direction. The peculiar scent
of decaying plants crawled into my nostrils, filling the air with a strong
odour. In the distance, I could hear the splashes of water reverberating
and the silent buzzing of mosquitos, eager for every single drop of my
blood. Intricate trees protectively blocked the passage of light, creating a
stark contrast between the stifling humidity and the intense heat.

Anchored in mud, the inextricable, tangled roots jutted out of the water’s
surface like arched bridges providing a primal pillar to the gnarled trees.
As I grabbed onto them for support, the slick grip of algae made it hard to
keep my balance. Nevertheless, I could visualise the chaotic harmony of
crooked, sturdy, cold-coloured trunks diverging into branches like veins
pulsing through the tree’s lifeblood. They cracked and snapped as the
wind howled through. A faint smell of moss emanated within the trees,
thick and green, mixed with the musty perfume of ancient wood. Touching
the bark of the trees, its rugged surface felt like trying to scale a mountain
made of jagged stones and craggy cliffs. The ethereal, dappled, verdant
leaves from tree branches murmured gently, like someone whispering a
crucial secret to somebody else; they sheltered marvellous birds, whose
colours were pleasing and charming. As I climbed higher, the velvety and
waxy leaves welcomed my fingertips with a serene smoothness.

In that moment, a tranquil stillness settled over me, as though the

mysterious maze itself was sharing its ancient wisdom.

Cautiously, I scooped the clay from beneath the water, its chocolate-
brown hue mirrored the trees’ bark. A potent scent rose from the mud like
a protective force, ordering the furtive mosquitoes to retreat with a silent
command. Sleek, soggy, and squishy, the mudflats clung to my steps like
invisible hands as I glided through the mystical labyrinth, their cool,
yielding texture enveloped my feet and washed away the intense heat as
if Mother Nature herself had offered me relief. The sediments stirred up by
the tides created swirling clouds in the murky water like fine dust falling to
the floor of a forgotten room. Pleasingly, the silken touch of water seemed
to kiss my skin with a refreshing ease, its delicate embrace soothing my
senses as the world slowed to an idyllic and subdued atmosphere.

Assignment 2: Descriptive Writing Draft 1

A resonant sound emerges from the extent of the puzzling maze, pulling
my gaze toward the labyrinthine roots. Crabs. Intimidating, they darted
outside their hidden burrows in the roots. With their hard and protective
shells, they were the sentinels of the mangrove, their frantic skittering
motions rippling through the muddy ground like a chorus of tiny
earthquakes, unsettling yet mesmerising. Camouflaged in the clay, their
claws clicked and clattered, a staccato rhythm that seemed both chaotic
and calculated, the music of the mangrove’s resilient soldiers.

But the ominous mood was ephemeral, a jubilant feeling quickly settled
over me when I looked to the top and I see pristine, vivacious, and fervent
creatures. Birds. Draped in hues of fire and sky, serenaded the mangrove
with a melody so pure it seemed to rise from the heart of creation itself,
conquering my heart with an exhilarating feeling.

An ecstatic atmosphere settled in the opulent mangrove. Cool and

velvety, the mud embraced my feet like a hug from an old friend. The rich
aroma of damp plants filled the air, a reminder of the untamed life
flourishing in the mysterious maze. In the distance, the triumphant
splashes of water echoed, while the hum of mosquitoes seemed almost
playful in their eager search for a home. Exuberant crabs danced and
elated birds chirped. Rooted in soft mud, the towering trees with its
extensive branches, filtered the sunlight, creating a kaleidoscope of light
and shadow that cooled the warmth of the day. In that serene moment, I
realised the mangrove was no longer nature’s labyrinth, it was nature’s
sanctuary, a sacred retreat shaped by the hands of time and nature’s
quiet wisdom.
