Unit Test 1
Host Today we’re talking about summer holidays. So, Zach, where did you go?
Zach I went to South America with my parents and my sister.
Host Why did you go all the way to South America?
Zach It was my parents’ decision. They both love South America. My dad was born there.
Host Oh, I see. So, where did you go first?
Zach We started in Venezuela. Angel Falls – that famous high waterfall – was amazing!
The noise of the water was really loud! I was excited to see it, but my sister was a bit
scared.
Host Where else did you go?
Zach Colombia. We spent a week there. My parents lived there when they were young.
That’s where they first met, so it’s a special place for them both.
Host So, what do you think was good about this particular holiday?
Zach Well, I spent a lot of time with my family which was great. And I got to practise my
Spanish. It’s a lot better now. The holiday also helped my geography because I
learned a lot about South American countries and the places in them. So, the trip was
useful for school too!

Unit Test 2
Journalist Thank you for agreeing to this interview, Stephanie. So … you recently showed your
students’ work at a local art event?
Stephanie Yes, that’s right. We called our exhibition ‘Lost and Found’ because we made the art
out of everyday materials and objects that we found.
Journalist How did you turn all that into art?
Stephanie Each student thought about the art they wanted to create with their objects. Then I
asked them to make quick drawings of their ideas. After that, they put everything
together using glue.
Journalist What kind of things did they make?
Stephanie Some students created posters based on their objects, others made paintings and
sculptures. Some of them were quite personal. One student – Salima, I think it was –
produced an amazing picture of her best friend, made out of glass and plastic. Here,
let me show you some photos.
Journalist Wow! Is that a sculpture of a horse? It’s the same size as a real horse! Incredible.
Stephanie Yes, a group of students worked together on this. They used wood, metal and
cardboard cartons.
Journalist Well, I think that’s all I need for my article about the exhibition. Could I get copies of
those photos?
Stephanie Yes, of course!

Unit Test 3
Teacher OK, let’s talk about your projects. Molly, you first.
Molly My project is on ‘Tiny Houses’. The main attraction of this type of houses is that they
are very cheap to build and are also very environmentally friendly because they’re so
energy efficient. I think in the future people won’t want to live in big houses that cause
harm to the environment or that cost a lot of money to live in.
Teacher Thank you. Jason, what about your project?
Jason My project’s about an ecovillage. It’s called ‘Torri Superiore’ and it’s in Liguria in Italy.
The residents grow their own organic vegetables and fruit, and they keep animals like
cows. They get hot water and electricity from solar panels. People mainly walk or ride
bicycles. This means there’s very little pollution.
Teacher Thanks, Jason. Becky?
Becky My project is about plans for a city in Argentina. The government wants to make the
city a greener place to live in. So, they are building a park in every district of the city.
They are also planting trees along the sides of streets. This will help to keep the city
cooler as well as being good for the environment.
Teacher Interesting! Well done everyone!

Unit Test 4
Reporter … thanks, Claire. Yes, I’m talking to people about their resolutions. Many people try
to be better people in the New Year. Let’s see if the people of Bridston want to make
changes this year. Excuse me, sir, are you making any resolutions this year?
Speaker 1 No. I always fail to keep to my resolutions, so this year, I’m not going to make
promises I have to change.
Reporter Thanks for your time. What about you, madam? Are you going to make any
resolutions?
Speaker 2 Yes! I’m going to go to the gym more. I know it’ll be difficult because I'm a busy
manager and a mother. But that’s my plan.
Reporter Thank you. What about you sir?
Speaker 3 Resolutions? No, I won’t be able to keep to them. Oh, wait – I might stop eating meat
every day. It’s bad for your health, isn’t it?

Reporter Yes. It’s not good for the environment either. Finally, you, madam. Any resolutions for
the New Year?
Speaker 4 I had a plan to stop working so much. But, my company just gave me a big project to
work on, so I know I’m going to be even busier! So, no, no resolutions for me!
Reporter Thanks. Well, there you go Claire …

Girl OK, thank you.

Unit Test 6
Radio host And our next caller is Jane. What would you like to ask our health specialist today,
Jane?
Jane Hi, yes, I’d like to ask Mike what I can do about my brother, Harry. He’s so unhealthy
and I’m quite worried about him.
Mike What do you mean by unhealthy, Jane?
Jane Well, he doesn’t do any exercise and only eats junk food.
Mike I see. Do you have family meals together?
Jane We do, but my parents have given up trying to make him eat heathy food. Now they
just let him have chips, burgers and pizza.
Mike So he doesn’t eat any fruit or vegetables at all?
Jane The only vegetables he has are the lettuce and tomato in his burger. Oh, and he has
pineapple on his pizza!
Mike That’s not good. I’m going to recommend a cookbook for you. It’s called Delicious
Junk. It has lots of healthy recipes for food that we often think of as junk food. They’re
really tasty. Get your parents to try some of those recipes.
Jane OK, thanks.
Mike Now, about exercise. Have you tried going on walks with him?
Jane No, but I know …

Unit Test 7
Pete Hey, Rosie. Where are you going?
Rosie Hi, Pete. To The Workshop. Have you heard about it?
Pete No, what is it?
Rosie Well, it started off as a place for retired people to socialize and work together on
some practical projects.
Pete Practical projects? Like what?
Rosie It was mostly men who went there at first. They missed working with their hands –
some of them were engineers, electricians and builders before they retired. They’d
meet and work on projects like fixing fridges or making toys for children’s homes.
Pete Sounds like a great idea.
Rosie Yeah, it was quite popular. More women began to take part and so there were more
skills available. Then someone had an idea. Why not pass these skills on to younger
generations? So they started inviting people our age to take part.
Pete Where did you hear about it?
Rosie My grandad invited me and it was a lot of fun. I’ve learned how to fix a washing
machine and make jumpers so far. So, I put out some posts on social media and
other teenagers have joined in. You should come and take a look.
Pete I’ll come with you now if that’s OK.
Rosie Great. Let’s go!

Unit Test 8
Hi, my name’s Jack. I’m from London. I’m 17 and my favourite subject is English. What do I do in
my spare time? Well, I love writing. I wrote a short story on my blog last month and won a prize for
it. It was a good feeling to know that other people like my writing.
Next year, when I finish college, I’m going to study English Literature and Media Studies at
Portsmouth University. It sounds like a cool place to be a student. It’s a friendly city and it’s got
good nightlife.
What do I want to do after university? The dream is to write novels about life as a teenager.
You can earn a lot if they sell well. I mean, I don’t want to be rich exactly, but I don’t want to be
poor either! Yeah, sure, money’s important … but I don’t think you need a lot to be happy.
At the moment I’m saving all my money for a big holiday in Spain with two friends this
summer. I think we will have a good time … if I can earn enough money to pay for it!

End-of-term Test 1
1
My great-grandmother was looking for seashells on the beach. Something sparkled and caught her
eye. It was a diamond. A huge one. A jeweller told her it was worth about €600,000. She sold it and
donated €100,000 to build a new school and gave another €100,000 to the local hospital. She put
the rest in the bank.

2
My girlfriend and I moved into a new house and we were cleaning out the living room. I saw a
rolled-up piece of paper. It was a painting of the sea. A few weeks later one of our friends saw the
painting and said, ‘That’s amazing! That looks like a painting by Turner!’ Unfortunately, we found
out that it’s a fake, but it’s worth about £200.

3
Angus was playing in the back garden a few weeks ago when he discovered it. He came into the
kitchen holding this bowl. It was dark orange and looked in quite good condition. We took it to the
local museum and they said it was Roman and quite rare. Now Angus wants to be an archaeologist
when he grows up!

End-of-term Test 2
Ruby So, Maya, are you going to do the Great North Run this year?
Maya Hi, Ruby. Yes, I am. What about you?
Ruby Yes, I want to run faster than I did last year!
Maya How did you do last year?
Ruby It took me two hours to run 20 kilometres. I’m going to train a lot more this year!
Maya Well, the run is on the 13th of September, so you’ve got lots of time to train. What kind
of training are you planning to do?
Ruby Running, of course! And maybe some swimming.
Maya Me too. So, what charity are you going to raise money for?
Ruby Well, last year I raised £2,000 for St Luke’s Children’s Hospital. This year I’m going to
raise money for Blue Cross – they’re an animal charity.
Maya Oh, that’s good! Oh, listen, I’ve got an idea. Shall we train together?
Ruby That is a good idea. How about in the mornings before work?
Maya Great. Let’s start tomorrow morning. Is that too soon?
Ruby No, that’s good. Are you able to meet at six?
Maya Um, that’s a bit early for me, but yes, I can do that. See you tomorrow then!
Ruby Yes, see you tomorrow.

End-of-term Test 3
Manuel Well, that’s it, Joanne. Our last day at this school! How was your final year?
Joanne It was really good, Manuel, thanks. I think the online learning the school introduced
this year was really helpful, don’t you?
Manuel Definitely. It was great that we were able to practise what we learned in class on our
phones or tablets.
Joanne Right. You could do your homework on the bus home, for example! And there were
lots of links to extra resources so that you could find out more information about
different subjects.
Manuel Yeah, that was really helpful.
Joanne So, what about you, Manuel? Your year has been pretty good too, hasn’t it?
Manuel Yes, I feel really confident about going to university now. My scores have been good
all year, so I think I’ll be able to do the Environmental Studies course at Bristol.
Joanne That’s great! The presentation you gave about saving water and electricity was really
good. It was clear and well-organized.
Manuel Thanks. The support you gave me with the cue cards was really helpful.
Joanne No problem. I enjoyed helping.
Manuel Have you got any universities in mind yet, Joanne?
Joanne No. I think I’m going to take a year off and do some travelling.
Manuel Sounds cool! Have you thought about going to …

End-of-year Test
Teacher OK, quiet please! Jim Stanton, one of the park rangers, is here to talk to us about the
camping trip next month.
Jim Right everyone, firstly, you’ll need a good quality tent, a warm sleeping bag and a
strong backpack. You will also need a saucepan, some matches to light a fire, some
tinned food, plates, a knife, fork and spoon, and – this is very important – a tin
opener. Don’t forget that!
Teacher What about clothes, Jim? What should we bring?
Jim During the summer, we recommend a waterproof jacket, a jumper, trousers, a few
pairs of socks and a good pair of walking shoes. And you’ll also need a hat to protect
your head from the sun. Now, remember we do have predators in the area. There are
bears, mountain lions, wolves and snakes. Bears are probably the most dangerous
animal you could meet on this trip, so be careful.

Teacher What can we do to prevent attracting them?

Jim It’s a good idea to make noise as you walk through the forest. This scares the bears
and they usually run away. However, if you come face-to-face with a bear, you
mustn’t run away. You should stand very still and talk in a low voice. You mustn’t
shout. Then slowly raise your arms above your head so that you look taller. This
makes the bears think you’re a big animal and maybe dangerous. After that, you
should slowly move backwards, away from the bear.
Teacher Thanks Jim, that’s useful advice. Now Jim’s going to tell us about …

End-of-year Test
Raj Wow, Matt, this place just gets better every year, doesn’t it?
Matt Yes, it does, Raj! I love the Design Fair!
Raj It might give me a few ideas for my design project this term.
Matt What do you have to do?
Raj I have to design a gadget for the home. Matt! Look at this! What is it?
Matt It’s a coffee mug … that also works as an iron to iron your clothes with.
Raj Now, this is good. Look, a sleeping bag with arms and legs. It looks really warm.
Matt Yeah, but it doesn’t look very easy to get into, does it?
Raj I think it looks OK. Hey, look at this: it’s a toaster that can copy photos on to pieces of
toast!
Matt Oh Raj, look at this! It this has got to be the best invention here. It’s the latest 3D printer.
It’s a printer that can make almost anything you want. You can use it to make objects,
food, art and even parts of the body!
Raj Really? That’s amazing, Matt!
Matt So, have you got any ideas for your gadget yet?
Raj Yes … I like the toaster and the coffee mug. I’d like to design something similar. A gadget
that’s fun, but also useful.
Matt What about combining a camera with an everyday object? Most people love taking
pictures, especially of themselves!
Raj Yes, that’s an interesting idea, but what about …
