The first time I heard Taylor Swift’s name was early 2008. A former Karen Bokram

Of course, GL’s love affair with Taylor (much like the world’s) would carry on for Senior Interns

I paused. Knowing it would likely be the last time I’d see her, I wanted to thank Lena Genovese

that you’re making some
serious mistakes with your
skin. Nope, we’re not talking about

everyday habits that subtly hurt
your skin’s outermost layer—aka

and gross bacteria could make its
way into the bottle, too. Ew.
Your skin, which is made up of
hundreds of millions of tiny cells,
kind of works the same way. Lipids,
or fatty compounds, hold all those
cells together, keeping in moisture
and nutrients while keeping out
dirt/pollution/bacteria (like, say,
what’s on your phone and just about
every other surface you touch).
Those lipids—combined with
your skin cells—make up the skin
barrier, explains dermatologist Dr.

responsible for how great your skin
looks (or, if you’ve been messing with
it, not so much).

CLASSIC CLAW CLIP

Lazy girls, rejoice. This look takes basically nothing
to recreate, not even a brush…unless you really,
really want to use one.
POW ER UP: Angelone recommends using “day-old
dirty hair” for this undone look (grit provides extra
hold, natch). Gather hair at the nape of the neck,
then twist it upward until you reach the crown.
Wrap the twisted hair around and fasten with a claw
clip (we heart the cute styles from Emi Jay, emijay.
com), allowing the ends of your hair to flow out of
the sides. Pull some pieces free for the ultimate “I
woke up like this” vibe and finish it off with a texture
spray like Eva NYC City Grit Matte Texture Spray
($13, ulta.com).

et’s state the obvious: Going through a breakup is
the worst. No matter the circumstances or whose
decision it was, your world has just been rocked, and
it’s hard to know how to move forward.
But that heartache you feel right now? It eventu-
ally fades away. We know it’s hard to believe…especially if
your ’ship just split or you got dumped out of nowhere (send-
ing hugs, btw). Yes, the old “time heals” saying is true—but it
doesn’t exactly make you feel better in the moment.
“You have to move through your feelings to get to the
other side,” says psychologist Dr. Rayne Palombit. “Being sad
is part of the process, but it does get easier as days go on.”
Though we can’t be there to make brownies and binge Net-

heartache with patience and compassion so you can survive

Your breakup just happened—and whether you’re reeling with
confusion, piecing together what happened or just feeling all
of the emotions, now’s the time to surround yourself with love
and good vibes. Gather your besties (or your mom, sis or any-
one who will 100% support you) plus a pan of your grandma’s
famous lasagna for a night of marathoning your fave movies,
crying and venting.

Tbh, rising and shining when your heart has just been torn into
itty bitty pieces is a struggle. You wake up then, bam, you’re
hit with memories of your ex. To help protect your emotions
on the first post-breakup day, we’ve got an assignment for you:
Make a list of things you love to do—and do one of them today.
“The most important thing to do after a split is to shift the
awareness back to yourself,” says Dr. Palombit. “What is it that
you like to do? How can you implement more of those things
into your schedule? Acknowledge what makes you feel good or
productive, then use your free time to do more of it.”
Maybe it’s crafting a homemade chai latte. Horseback rid-
ing. A long bath. Visiting a friend’s puppy. Going to the farmers
market. A face mask and a good playlist. As you heal from your
breakup, you can check back in with your list as a reminder to
fill your day with things that bring you genuine joy.

Dear Carol
GUY TROUBLES
So one of my friends told me that he has a crush on me…and I told
him that I liked him back. And we’ve been talking ever since. The
other day he texted me and said, “Um, can I ask you a question?”
and I said sure. Then he said, “What would you say if I asked you
to be my girlfriend?” I was not expecting him to ask me that. I
honestly don’t know what I would say if he did ask me, but I said
that I think I’d say yes. I want to be in a relationship, but I don’t feel
I’m ready yet. Help?

Dear Guy Troubles,

First of all, you called your letter “Guy Troubles,” but there are far
worse problems than having a guy you like like you back. Since you
two are friends, do your best to be honest with him. Say that you like
him but aren’t sure if you feel ready for a serious boyfriend-girlfriend
relationship, though you do like the idea of hanging out with him. It’s
OK to take baby steps. You don’t have to rush anything. You two may
even be on the same page (sounds to me like he’s new at this, too—
that’s probably why he phrased his question in such a coy way). Enjoy
these feelings and if at some point you realize you’d rather just be
friends, deliver that news gently. Or who knows, things between the

“Consider going to a person you trust or someone

who has had to make a similar choice to get their per-
spective,” advises Dr. Suchov.
Think about the people in your life. If a friend is ask-
ing to copy your homework and you’re torn, can you
find a sibling, cousin or teammate who may have been
there before and can help provide some wisdom?
“This guy I didn’t really like asked me out. I didn’t
want to hurt his feelings, so I said maybe,” shares Tori
B., 15. “I ended up telling my older sister. She helped
me find the words to let him down while still being
respectful and not creating any drama.”

TAKE A BREAK.
If you’re not under a super strict timetable, consider
stepping back from the decision—especially if you’re
feeling any pressure from others around you. Go for a
bike ride, catch up with your BFF, take a long shower or
just get a good night’s sleep.
“I realized that if I try to make a big choice when
I’m stressed out, it makes it way harder to figure out
what to do,” says Alexia A., 16.
It’s true: Staying trapped in the decision-making
process can make it tougher for you to find a broader
perspective, come up with creative solutions or tune
into your gut feelings about the sitch.
The key is to get outside of those thoughts so you
can reapproach your debate feeling like a refreshed
and empowered you. A little alone time (and self-care)
might bring all the clarity you need.

REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN

ALWAYS CHANGE YOUR MIND.
Ready for some good news? If you made a choice and
it just doesn’t feel right anymore, it’s perfectly OK to
switch it up.
“You can try something and realize it’s not for you,”
says Dr. Suchov. “Oftentimes, trying something and dis-
liking it is more valuable than not having tried at all.”
The idea is to make decisions that feel authen-
tic and fill you with pride. Tried out for tennis only to
realize you’re more of a theater gal? Pat yourself on
the back for giving something new a shot and add your
name to the list for next year’s drama club auditions.
If it’s something bigger, like failing to set boundar-
ies with a friend, it’s not too late to speak up. You’re
allowed to grow—and the right crew will happily accept
the new, empowered you.
Finally, don’t get caught up in striving for perfec-
tion. Tbh, there’s no such thing as a perfect decision.
But the more we get comfortable with making tough
choices, the more we learn about ourselves—and the
easier it becomes to know who we are and what we
want in the future. And making the call to be truer to
yourself? That’s always a decision to celebrate.

taken on intense roles in tons of major films (ever heard of Avengers:
Infinity War?) and worked alongside (and even befriended) major tal-
ents like Margot Robbie and Adam Driver.
Her star power becomes even more obvious once you learn that some of the
biggest names in show business look to her as a muse, with both Greta Gerwig
(who directs her in Barbie, which pretty much everyone is already calling the
movie of the summer) and the iconic Meryl Streep inspired by her raw talent.
P H OTO G R A P H E D BY Not bad for a girl who’s just trying to get through sophomore year of high school.
RAUL ROMO A totally typical teenager with a fabulous double life, Ariana is a study in con-
trasts. She’s a sophisticated art lover with a keen eye for couture (at our photo
shoot, she picked out everything she is wearing from racks of new and vintage
designer finds). But when she’s not on set, she spends her weekends hitting the
mall in her pajamas or racing dirt bikes with her dad.

How do you know if your coach is displaying toxic behavior—or just
tough love? Here are some red flags to look for.
TOUGH LOVE: Subbing you out after a bad play.
TOXIC: Not speaking to you for a week after you missed a few shots.

TOUGH LOVE: Having the team do an extra interval at the end of a

killer workout.
TOXIC: Blasting you in front of the team for not trying hard enough
when you don’t hit your pace.
TOUGH LOVE: Taking you aside and addressing your poor attitude.
TOXIC: Ignoring you if you cry or show emotions during or after a
game or telling you to “suck it up” when you’re having an especially
rough day.
TOUGH LOVE: Sending the entire team into the weight room for a
“bonus” strength sesh that leaves you sore for days.
