Game Time Travel

The history of games dates to the ancient human past. Have you ever been to the zoo? If
so, you’ll most likely have sat and watched monkeys and apes for a while. It doesn’t take
very much to see them at play. They’ll chase each other, throw things, and jump on each
other. Assuming, as seems likely, that human beings are just better evolved monkeys, it’s
likely that we’ve been playing games for a long, long time. We were probably playing
games before we learned to speak or even to stand on two legs. Games are an integral
part of all cultures and are one of the oldest forms of human social interaction. Games are
formalized expressions of play which allow people to go beyond
immediate imagination and direct physical activity. Common features of games include
uncertainty of outcome, agreed upon rules, competition, separate place and time,
elements of fiction, elements of chance, prescribed goals and personal enjoyment.
