1 Geometric definition :
The final design that achieves the requirements was the 5th iteration of the XQU project, the geometry
is defined as follows :

Paramater size
Wing span 4.5m
Lenght 1m
Internal Volume 100 litres
Projected Surface Area 2m²

2 Performance figures :
Paramater Value
Projected total weight (With Payload) 23.5kg
Projected endurance @ cruise conditions 17h 43m
Projected maximum endurance (No payload) 27h 25m
Trim velocity (Cruise speed) 18 m/s
Stall velocity (No High lift devices) 10 m/s
Max climb rate 0.85 m/s
Trim Angle of attack 8.5°
Battery voltage required 14.8V
Battery capacity required 264 Ah
Power required for level flight 420W

3 Stability and flight dynamics :

Dynamic mode Value Interpretation
Short Period -1.7459 ± 7i Mode is stable
Phugoid -0.0035 ± 0.27i Mode is stable
Dutch roll -0.7486 ± 3.6283i Mode is stable
Roll mode -37 Mode is stable
Spiral mode -1.48 Mode is stable

Notes on flight dynamics : The UAV exhibits well behaved flight performance, we can note that
the short Period mode is well damped with reletively low frequency oscillations, while we can note that
the phugoid mode is weakly damped and might diverge at higher angles of attacks, which will require
either pilot corrections or autopilot commands.

for the lateral modes we can also observe good flight caracteristique, as the roll and spiral modes
are heavily damped, while the dutch roll mode is reletively weakly damped which might require pilot
attention or autopilot intervention at higher yaw angles.

The figure below show the values listed above for both the mode approximations and their analytical
values.

4 Power Plant selection :

The following graph shows the Thrust to weight ration required, and the Clmax required to achieve
the following requirements :
Requirement Value
Cruise speed 18 m/s
Stall speed 10 m/s
Load factor for level turn 1.5G
Take-off distance 150 m
Climb rate 1 m/s
Service Ceiling 5000m

From the figure below we can deduce that the powerplat required has to achieve at least 6kg of static
Thrust which translates to a thrust to weight ratio of 0.33
