JOB DESCRIPTION

1. JOB DETAILS

Job Title: Radiographer: Trauma, Acute and General


Radiography (TAG)

Grade: Band 5

Directorate: Clinical Support

Location: Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust Sites, based at RCH but with
rotation to community sites

2. JOB PURPOSE

 To perform a wide range of clinical imaging examinations within Clinical Imaging as


well as in Theatres, Wards and Accident and Emergency.

 To work as part of a team providing a 24 hour, 7 day radiographic service for the
Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust, including a commitment to the ‘on-call’ service.

 The Practitioner will comply with the Ionising Radiation Regulation (IRR 99),
Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) regulation (IR(ME)R 2000) and the Trust
Radiation Safety Policy.

 Justify radiology referrals (within scope of practice) using referral criteria which falls
within the Royal College of Radiologists Guidelines and the Clinical Imaging
Protocol Manual.

 To occasionally deputise for the Shift Leader in their absence or when required.

 To work with the Radiography Team to continually improve the Clinical Imaging
Service.

 To work closely with colleagues within a multidisciplinary team.

4. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Qualifications:
 Diploma of the College of Radiographers or BSc (Hons) Radiography (diagnostic).
 Current HPC state registration.

 Effective use of the computerised radiology information system and PACS as well
as electronic referral management system and other IT technology (e.g. e mail,
 excel spreadsheets etc.).
 To keep up to date with advances in specialist imaging techniques.
 Portfolio evidence to support competency in a wide range of routine examinations.

5. KEY RESULT AREAS

Clinical:
 To perform a wide range of clinical imaging examinations within Clinical Imaging as
well as in theatres, on wards and in accident and emergency.

 To perform and support clinical imaging examinations/scans in other clinical
 imaging modalities.
 To undertake basic CT imaging.
 To take part in the “Red Dot” system. [The Red Dot System is when the
radiographer annotates an image that they believe to be abnormal].
 To undertake all clinical imaging examinations in a professional manner ensuring a
high standard of clinical care.

 To recognise anatomy and pathology (within scope of practice) to enable
optimisation of imaging and to liaise with Consultant Radiologists to arrange further
images/scan sequences when required.

 To carry out all radiographic examinations to the highest standard and adhering to
IRR99 and IR(ME)R 2000.

 To be responsible for the safe use of Radiation within the Clinical Imaging
Department as well as other areas including wards, operating theatres and the
Accident and Emergency Department, and to ensure that the Local Rules are
 observed at all times.
 To provide the highest possible standard of care to patients and their carers.
 To work with the shift leader to support the effective workflow of patients.
 To occasionally deputise for the Shift Leader in their absence or when required.
 To be reflective, flexible and autonomous in thinking and outlook.
 To take an active part in clinical governance.
 To observe all Clinical Imaging Protocols and Procedures.

 To be responsible for the care of all X ray equipment and accessories including
 maintaining a high level of cleanliness.
 To report all equipment faults to the Team Leader or their deputy without delay.

 To ensure that any operational difficulties are reported to the Team Leader or their
 deputy immediately.
 To work effectively under pressure.

6. COMMUNICATIONS & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

 To be responsible to the Team Leader and/or the Shift Leader.



 To play an active role in maintaining a team approach to the Clinical Imaging
service.

 To supervise Clinical Imaging Assistants, Assistant Practitioners and Student
Radiographers.

 To promote and maintain good working relationships with other teams and
departments within the hospital.

 To use effective communication skills with patients who may present with complex
needs, including giving information to patients and carers so that they understand
the imaging procedure.

 To deal with initial complaints from patients, carers or other professionals and refer
 where necessary to the appropriate supervisor. To have an understanding of the
Trust’s complaints procedures.

 Provide a consistent and high standard of patient care whilst working under
pressure.

 To provide good quality diagnostic images in difficult and challenging
 circumstances.
 Work flexibly to meet the demands of the service.

8. OTHER

Education, Audit and Clinical Governance:


 To supervise in service training of student radiographers and assistant practitioners
when necessary.

 To take an active part in the Directorate’s multi-disciplinary Clinical Governance and
 Audit programme.
 To carry out appraisals for junior staff.
 To participate in appraisal and create a Personal Development Plan in line with the
Department and Trust’s objectives.

 To undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as a requirement for the
 Health Profession Council (HPC) registration.
 To undertake mandatory training.

Mental Effort
There is an occasional requirement for prolonged concentration (operating x ray/scanning
equipment and carrying out diagnostic x ray examinations on patients)

Emotional Effort
Occasional exposure to distressing or emotional circumstances (dealing with distressed
patients or their relatives/carers)

Working Conditions
Occasional exposure to highly unpleasant working conditions (dealing with bodily fluids,
verbal aggression)

9. OTHER

 The post-holder must comply with all RCHT Policies and Procedures.

 The post-holder must work within infection control guidelines to ensure that work
methods do not constitute a risk of infection either to the health care professional,
to the client or to any persons working/visiting in RCHT premises.

 This job description is subject to the Terms and Conditions of service of Royal
Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, and the post holder will undertake any other duties
which may be required from time to time.
