CASE STUDY 1:

If the length of the perpendicular from the center of a circle to a line is equal to the radius of
circle, then the line is a tangent to the circle. The point where the tangent touches the circle is
called the point of contact. Based on information, answer the following questions

1. Find values of k for which line 3x-4y+k=0 is a tangent to the circle x2+y2=1.
2. If the line ax+by=1 touches the circle 9(x2+y2)=1, then find the equation of circle on
which (a,b) lies.
3. Find the area of Circle x2+y2-a2=0, which is touched by the line x+2y=5.
4. Find the equations of tangents to the circle x2+y2=25 which are parallel to the line
x+2y=15.

CASE STUDY 2:

A circle of radius 2 units touches the coordinate axes in the first quadrant.Based on above
information, answer the following questions
5. Find equation of circle.
6. The circle is rolled on Y axis in the +ve direction through one complete revolution.Find
equation of circle in new position.
7. Find equation of image of given circle in the line mirror x=0
8. Find equation of image of circle of new position in Q 6 , in the line mirror y=x.
9. Find area of image circle obtained in Q 8.
CASE STUDY 3:
A beam is supported at its ends by supports which are 48 metres apart.Since the load is
concentrated at the centre & deflected beam is in the shape of a parabola.
Based on above information, answer the following questions
(i) Taking the center of the deflected beam as origin & horizontal & Vertical lines
through it as coordinate axes, find the equation of parabola.
(ii) How far from the center is the deflection 4.5 cm?
CASE STUDY 4:
A rod AB of length 15 m slides between a horizontal bar & a vertical bar. A point P is taken on the
rod in such a way that AP=6m. Based on above information, answer the following questions
(i) Taking coordinate axes along the horizontal & vertical bars , find equation of the path
traced by point P.
(ii) Find the lengths of axes of the conic obtained.
(iii) Find eccentricity of conic obtained.
(iv) Find coordinates of foci of conic obtained.
CASE STUDY 5: A man running a race course notes that he is always 32m nearer to flagpost at
B than its distance from flagpost at A. The two flagposts are 40 m apart. Based on
information,answer the following questions:
(i) Find equation of path traced by the man if mid point of AB is taken as the origin, AB
along X axis & line perpendicular to it as Y axis.
(ii) What are the lengths of axes of conic described by the man?
(iii) What is the eccentricity of conic?
(iv) Find the coordinates of foci of the conic.
