MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

DR. ROLAND
BULLARD
Chair

Members of the Melton Community and Friends,

For more than 30 years, The Melton Foundation has provided a platform for individuals from
diverse backgrounds to come together, exchange ideas, engage in dialogue, and collaborate on
issues that address global concerns. The foundation’s staunch commitment to developing leaders
and catalyzing positive change, stands as a beacon of hope in our society. For these reasons, I am
honored to be a part of this community.

There were several points of pride for the Melton Foundation this year! Here are a few highlights
— First, the unveiling of our new Global Citizenship Development Framework was a pioneering
moment for the foundation and brought us a step closer to creating a more inclusive and resilient
world. Next, we made significant advances in creating and implementing DEI policies and
practices. Finally, our widely successful Global Solvers Accelerator initiative provided yet another
opportunity for us to engage the broader community in our critical work. This is certainly not an
exhaustive list!

While our community’s current efforts are certainly commendable, going forward, we must
continue articulating and meeting our values, goals, and priorities with clarity and conviction. As
Chair, I pledge to encourage and empower our team to take advantage of this unique opportunity
to serve as a catalyst for intercultural dialogue and understanding. This will require courageous
and collaborative leadership from all of us. My hope is that through these conversations, we can
help resolve those issues which divide us and facilitate critical connections across borders.
Ultimately, future generations will benefit from our commitment to build a more just, inclusive,
and sustainable world.

In conclusion, as I review the attached ‘23 impact report, I am overcome with pride and gratitude
and would be remiss if I didn’t thank a few members of our community. First, I want to thank our
executive office staff (by name) -- Alafia, Ashitha, Eric, Lars, Nawaz, Patty, Sonali, and Steffen
who are outstanding facilitators of all that happens within the organization. We see you and
appreciate you! Next, I extend much gratitude to our Board of Directors who help generate
resources, create policy, and provide support to the executive team. Finally, and most importantly
I want to thank each of you, our Fellows (and our campus coordinators/TTs who support this
work) for your dedication and leadership in advancing the important mission of this organization.
Our world is better because of each of you. Let us continue to press forward!

01
MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

DR. STEFFEN
BETHMANN
Executive Director

The year 2023 was another eventful year for the Melton Foundation. Our Global Citizenship
Learning Program continued to support our Junior Fellows in developing global competencies and
saw another improvement in its curricula. We implemented our Global Solvers Accelerator
Program & Co-Lab for the first time in its full complexity, being able to gather the participants at
our Co-Lab in Gotha, Germany. Our Global Citizenship Convention in Temuco, Chile, was a roaring
success. In our Hubs, we organized exciting activities such as the African SDG Innovation
Challenge, a conference for civil society organizations in Temuco, Chile, and a networking dinner
in Bangalore.
Visits to our Hubs in Jena, Bangalore, and Hangzhou allowed us to reconnect with our community.
Meeting with our Senior Fellows at our SF Convention during Dillard’s homecoming week was
especially heartwarming. On the organizational side, we were able to implement our new Global
Citizenship Development Framework and connect our fully developed Theory of Change with our
new M&E system. You will find more about these exciting developments on the following pages.

Over the last few years, we have continued evolving from a more closed network to an open,
mission-driven organization while working closely with our core community. As an organization,
we believe that the essence of global citizenship lies in our shared humanity.
As such, we convey skills, values, and attitudes to work towards a more equitable, inclusive,
peaceful, and sustainable world.

However, applying global citizenship principles faces significant hurdles in a world where
ideological, political, or territorial conflicts persistently arise. Unfortunately, in the last year, many
violent conflicts broke out, and others continued. These conflicts often stem from deeply
entrenched beliefs and historical grievances, complicating the path toward the ideals of Global
Citizenship. In some contexts, the very notion of Global Citizenship has been perceived as an
abstract ideal, far removed from the immediate concerns and realities that define individuals'
lives. Opinions about controversial issues are becoming more and more polarized. Every day,
fewer people seem willing to listen to different perspectives, let alone aiming to understand and
feel empathy with others.

In such an environment, our mission becomes more critical than ever: We promote and enable
global citizenship as a way for individuals and organizations to work together across boundaries
of place and identity to solve challenges in an interconnected world.
As an organization, we are taking steps to amplify our impact and continue to support our fellows
to be changemakers. We envision a world where we transcend differences, acting on our shared
humanity to thrive collectively. We invite everybody to be part of these efforts. Only through
collaboration can we make a difference.

Development Framework

The Melton Foundation has launched its Global Citizenship Development Framework. It consists of four interlaced
threads that weave into patterns of Global Citizenship.

We believe that by fostering a reflective understanding and connecting with ourselves and our environment, we
enhance our capacity to cultivate meaningful relationships and collaborate across boundaries. Being
knowledgeable about the institutions that govern our world, power structures, frameworks such as the SDG and
critically assessing information enables us to make better sense of the world we live in. By combining these skills
and knowledge, we are better equipped to enable and drive change toward a more inclusive, equitable, and
peaceful world.

Each of the four threads has three to four sub-dimensions. They weave together into a web of learning that can
be adapted to the context to convey Global Citizenship skills, values, and attitudes. The Framework provides
common threads for all our programs. We strongly believe in the power of experiential learning and create
spaces for young adults to grow during their Global Citizenship Journey
