The rest of the problems in the packet are open answer. Use these problems to practice
showing your work and explaining your reasoning in a thorough, organized and concise
manner.
31) Determine the nature of the quadrilateral 𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷 whose vertices are listed below. You must
justify your conclusion using slopes and distances.
Use the table below for the height of a tree to answer questions 32 – 34.
Age (years) 6 10 14 18 22 26
Height (inches) 45 65 85 105 125 145
32) Assuming the pattern in the table continues, find a function for the height (ℎ) of the tree
𝑡 years after it has been planted. Write your equation in function notation
ℎ(𝑡) =
33) Interpret the slope and y-intercept from your equation in number 32 using the context of tree
growth. Do these interpretations make sense in this context? Explain.
34) Another tree grows according to the model ℎ2 (𝑡) = −1.05(122.8−𝑥) + 400. Graph this
equation and your equation from number (32) using 𝑦1 and 𝑦2 on your calculator. (Use the
window: x-min=0, xmax=100, ymin=0, ymax = 400)
The graphs of these equations intersect twice. Use your calculator to find the intersections
and explain what each means in the context of this problem. Which of the two growth
models seems more sensible?

35) The water park is a popular field trip destination. This year the senior class at High School
A and the senior class at High School B both planned trips there. The senior class at High
School A rented and filled 7 vans and 6 buses with 250 students total. High School B
rented and filled 8 vans and 12 buses with 404 students total. How many people does each
van and each bus hold?
36) Working alone it takes Thomas 12 hours to pick forty bushels of apples. Jiab can pick 40
bushels of apples in only 8 hours. How long would it take them to pick 100 bushels if they
are working together?
(b) If the drive wheel rotates at a speed of 25,000 revolutions per minute, at what speed does
the large wheel rotate?
38) How many spherical balls of radius 5 cm could be filled using the air from one spherical
ball of radius 25 cm?
39) A rectangular pen is designed so that 5 more than its width is 12 less than 2 times it’s
length.
(b) Find the perimeter of the pen if it contains 200 square feet of space. Round your
answer to the nearest 100th of a foot.

31. The quadrilateral is a square. Opposite sides have the same slope, adjacent sides have opposite
reciprocal slopes, and all sides are congruent. (Alternatively show that the diagonals are both congruent
and perpendicular)
32. ℎ(𝑡) = 15 + 5𝑡
33. The y-intercept means that the tree was 15 inches tall when it was planted. This is reasonable if the
tree was not planted as a seed, but as a sapling. The slope means that the tree grew 5 inches each year.
This seems like a reasonable growth rate.
34. The two curves intersect at (1.07, 20.35”) 𝑎𝑛𝑑 (74.93, 389.67"). These two points represent the
times at which the two trees were the same height. That means at age 1.07 years, both trees were 20.35
inches tall and at 74.93 years, both trees were 389.67 inches tall. The second equation seems more
sensible since the tree seems to reach a max height of 400” and slows its growth while the other tree
continues to grow 5 inches each year.
35. Vans 16, Buses 23
36. 12 hours.
37. (a) 5 times; (b) 5,000 revolutions per minute.
25 𝑐𝑚 3
38. Answer = 125 balls. The volume of a 25 cm ball is ( 5 𝑐𝑚 ) = 125 times that of a ball of only 5 cm.
39. Perimeter ≈ 56.69 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡.
10𝑚
40. 7𝑚−7; 𝑚 ≠ 1, 𝑚 ≠ 4, 𝑚 ≠ −9
