Cubic Functions

The largest power of x is 3.

Modelling with the cubic function
(i)The number of fish, F, in a pond from the period 1995 to 2010 is modelled by the function
3 2
F ( x )=−0.030 x +0.86 x −6.9 x +67 , where x is the number of years after 1995.
a) Use the GDC to sketch the function for 0 ≤ x ≤ 18.
b) Find the number of fish in the pond after 6 years.
c) Find the number of fish in the pond after 13 years.

(ii) A pandemic is modelled using the equation,

y=¿, where x is the number of weeks after the outbreak started and y is the number of
cases reported.
a) Use the GDC to sketch the function for 0 ≤ x ≤ 30.
b)Find the number of cases after 10 weeks.
c) Find the number of cases after 20 weeks.
d) Is this a good model to represent the number of cases of a pandemic?

The exponential function

1. The number, N, of insects in a colony is given by N=2000 e0.1 t where t is the number of
days after observations have begun.
(i) Sketch the graph of N against t.
(ii) What is the population of the colony after 20 days?
(iii) How long does it take the colony to reach a population of 10000?
2. The radioactive mass, M grams in a lump of material is given by M =25 e−0.0012 t where t is
the time in seconds since the first observation.
(i) Sketch the graph of M against t.
(ii) What is the initial size of the mass?
(iii) What is the mass after 1 hour?
(iv) The half-life of a radioactive substance is the time it takes to decay to half of its mass.
What is the half-life of this material?
3. Make p the subject of ln(p) – ln(1 – p) = t.

4. Solve the equation 4 2 x +1=87− x

5. Th e temperature T, in degrees Celsius, of a cooling liquid is modelled by the equation

3t
T =24+ 72× 0.6 , where t is the time in minutes after the cooling begins.
(a) What was the initial temperature of the liquid?
(b) Find the temperature of the liquid after 2 minutes.
(c) How long does it take for the liquid to cool to 26°C?
(d) What temperature does the model predict the liquid will eventually reach?
6.A population of rates changes according to the formula R(t) = 8 e 0.22 t, where t is the time
measured in months.
a)Does the population increase or decrease? Explain.
b)How many rats were there at the beginning?
How long will it be until there are 80 rats?

7. For a radioactive isotope, the decay is modelled by the function A=A 0 e−kt , where A is the
mass of the isotope in grams and A0 is the initial mass, and t is time in years. In 5 years’
time, 40 g of this substance reduced to 34 g.
a) Find the value of k, correct to 3 sf.
b) Find the half-life of this substance.
8. When a bowl of soup is removed from the microwave, it cools according to the model
T(t) = 80 e−0.12 t , t in minutes and T in 0C.

a) What was the temp when it was removed from the oven?
b) The room temp was 22 0C. How long until the soup cools to room temperature?
