INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Academic performance is a complex phenomenon influenced by multiple factors.

These factors include institutional, pedagogical, and psychosocial aspects, as well as

socioeconomic status (Vargas, 2014). Teaching efficacy, study habits, family

environment, and distractions significantly predict students' academic achievement

(Arora & Singh, 2017). Other influential factors include student base knowledge,

school environment, environmental pollution, teacher and parental support, friend

circle, and health (Sharma & Bansal, 2021). Understanding these factors is crucial for

improving educational management and student success in various academic settings

(Brew et al., 2021).

However, many students struggle to achieve high academic performance due

to various factors. According to Alcuizar (2016), poor academic performance is

significantly impacted by nutritional status and poor living conditions, particularly in

rural areas. In light of these factors, Musser et al. (2017) stated that low-achieving

students often struggle with the transition from high school to university, adhere to rigid

gender roles, and managing mental health issues. Additionally, poor academic

performance is significantly influenced by a lack of family support, financial problems,

low motivation, inadequate learning facilities, and ineffective teaching techniques

(Govindarajoo et al., 2022).

A study conducted in Bangladesh concluded that students have low academic

performance due to their fathers' low education levels, partial family cooperation,

irregular class attendance, excessive time spent gossiping with friends, and overuse

of smartphones (Shahjahan et al., 2021). Another recent study conducted in Vietnam

by Phan et al. (2024) found that students also exhibit low academic performance.

According to them, students use fewer learning strategies, which results in higher

stress and anxiety.

Moreover, at Maticmatic National High School in Pangasinan, it was found that

some students had below-average academic performance in the first semester, largely

due to a lack of consistent study habits. The study reveals that 54.17% of students

exhibit poor study behaviors, such as seldom reading or taking notes, with 50% never

taking notes and 37.50% only studying the day before exams. External factors,

including a challenging home environment 87.50%, peer pressure and social media

addiction 83.33%, and financial instability 79.17%, further contribute to these poor

habits, highlighting the need for targeted interventions to address both academic

behaviors and these external influences (Salcedo-Relucio, 2019).

Meanwhile, in local issues in Northern Mindanao, Philippines, it was found that

students in the area have poor academic performance, as well as low scores on the

National Achievement Test (NAT), due to poor living conditions and the distance of

the school from their homes. Moreover, schools in rural areas receive less support

from the local government for instructional materials and teacher training (Alcuizar,

2016). Additionally, it was stated that students in Mindanao, Philippines, have low

academic performance due to remote learning which has led to a high level of stress

and great extent of adaptive coping strategies (Cahapay & Rotas, 2022).

Multiple studies have already been conducted to investigate the academic

performance of students. However, these studies examined how other factors, such

as emotional intelligence (Jacob et. al. 2015), social media (Goet, 2022), and

motivation (Sabanal et. al. 2023) were related to academic performance. In this study,

the researchers seek to investigate the relationship between study habits and
academic performance among General Academic Strand students at Tagum City

Regional Academy for Senior High School. This investigation aims to address a gap

in the current research. Given the scenarios mentioned earlier, the researcher felt

compelled to investigate these variables. Moreover, this study is expected to

contribute to the current understanding of the subject, particularly within the

educational context.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the significance of the relationship between the

study habits and academic performance among general academic strand students in

Tagum City Regional Academy for Senior High School. Specifically, it seeks answers

to the following questions:

1. What is the level of study habits among general academic strand students of

Tagum City Regional Academy for Senior High School in terms of:

1.1 note taking; and

1.2 time management?

2. What is the level of academic performance among general academic strand

students of Tagum City Regional Academy for Senior High School in terms of:

2.1 self-efficacy;

2.2 students attendance; and

2.3 class engagement?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the study habits and academic

performance among general academic strand students of Tagum City Regional

Academy for Senior High School?
