Most of the time, I write about blizzards, typhoons, floods, and so on. But I don’t ski in a blizzard or get wet
in a flood. Well, this week’s blog is different, because this time I was there when something big happened!
I was on holiday in an area which has earthquakes. I knew that before I went. But the last big earthquake
there happened 50 years ago, so I didn’t really think about it when I booked.
During the first few days, I went swimming every morning in the warm sea and then, in the afternoon, I
walked up the side of the mountain behind the town. I didn’t climb over rocks or anything like that. I just
walked slowly up a few hundred meters of one of the old donkey tracks.
On the afternoon of the fifth day, I was on the mountain when the ground started to move. I remembered
about the earthquakes then, and I thought, ‘The ground will open up and I’ll fall in.’ Then I looked down at
the town and saw a huge wave coming very fast towards it. Houses near the beach disappeared under the
water. I was safe on the side of the mountain, but my hotel fell down and I lost all my stuff.
1. The writer’s blog is usually about bad weather. T
2. The writer thought there might be an earthquake while he was there on holiday. F
3. One of the donkey tracks went to the top of the mountain. NG

there, but Grandpa has a boat, and he took us out there yesterday. It is so (3) quiet, with only birdsong and
the sound of the wind. There are pretty flowers everywhere which I wanted to (4) pick, but Grandpa told me
not to do that because the flowers are for everyone.
Tomorrow there is a festival in a place near my grandparent’s house, and we are going to watch folk games
and the other entertainment. Grandma wants me to take part in the cake competition, so I plan to bake

Listening 1:
Would you like to spend your summer in a safe, green environment?
Do you want to learn and have fun with people of your own age?
Then come and join us at Green Camp in Morton Forest.
We take children from the age of 10 up to 16.
The camp is for three weeks in July, and at that time of year, the wildflowers and wildlife in the forest are
wonderful.
We call ourselves Green Camp for several reasons.
3
Firstly, we make our own electricity from the water which flows down from the mountains behind Morton
Forest.
Secondly, we don’t do any damage to the soil or the air by burning things or polluting the land or the local
river.
Thirdly, we are careful with cooking the right amount of food every day, but all the food waste goes to the
animals which live at the camp.
Finally, all our bottles and jars are glass, so we can send them for recycling. We don’t use any plastic day-to-
day.
So come and find out about a natural environment without doing any harm to it.
Listening 2:
Boy: Is this your favorite hobby?
Girl: This? No, not really. I like making clothes, jumpers, skirts, and so on, but I prefer being outdoors. Well, I
preferred being outdoors in the past, but I can do my hobby indoors now.
Boy: What do you mean?
Girl: I love climbing, and there’s a rock wall at the sports center now. It’s great to get to the top!
Boy: So when did you become interested in this hobby?
Girl: Well, I started climbing real rock walls with my parents about five years ago. I was six. But the plastic rock
wall at the center is new – they built it last month.
Boy: Do you always climb with your parents?
Girl: Not now. They don’t like the sports center. Jenny, my sister, is two years older than me, and she taught me
how to climb plastic walls, but she isn’t interested in the hobby anymore, so I go alone.
Boy: Is it different from climbing real rocks?
Girl: Yes, because there is always a way to the top with a plastic wall.
Boy: Do you go to the sports center often?
Girl: Once a week, on a Monday after school. I have too much homework on other days, and it’s too busy on the
weekend.
Boy: Why do you like it? Is it scary or is it exciting?
Girl: Exciting? Well, it sure isn’t relaxing! But a plastic wall is great, because I know there is a way to the top. It’s
different each time I go, and it’s great to find the answer to the difficult problem.
