Reflection

In the past few years, we have witnessed the widespread use of drugs that has been
eminent in today’s society. The Philippines is one of the countries that is known to be in a war
against these illegal utilization of drugs. This type of abuse most commonly will lead to drug
addiction that needs to be stopped immediately. Addiction is a disease that affects the physical
condition, as well as, the mental state of an individual. This will also affect the emotions of the
person. Drug addiction is not as simple as we have thought. This does not simply mean “illegal
drugs”, it is far more than that. Study after study shows that illegal utilization of drugs may lead
to addiction. Currently, the two most well-known classification of drugs used here in the
Philippines are a variant of Methamphetamine, which is most commonly known for its name,
“Shabu”, and “Marijuana”.

The enactment of the implementation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drug Act of 2002
in the Philippines or most commonly known as the Republic Act No. 9165 shows how notorious
and serious the situation is regarding illegal drugs. But on top of that R.A No. 9165 also depicts
that the government clearly shows acquisition to spread awareness to the people especially for
the youth since they are the one who are most likely to be the victim of the harsh reality.

The major increase of the utilization and abuse of these illegal drugs are mainly used as a
stress reliever to escape the harsh reality that we live in. In dealing with drugs, we must know the
difference between illegal and not, as it poses a major cost that affects our lives. As we all know,
drugs affect our Central Nervous System and destroy our brain cells, heart, liver, kidneys, etc.
allowing us to not think clearly. These illegal drugs pose harm to our body and will eventually
destroy our lives too. Lastly, we can also include the drug misuse in our category of drug abuse.

I couldn’t be grateful enough to the seminar that I attended because it taught me a lot of
lessons in life, especially to correct my misconceptions about how drug-related policies are
implemented here in the Philippines, and how illegal drugs, in general, affects people especially
the youth. I came to a realization that drug addiction is not just about the use of illegal drugs like
heroin and such. Drug addiction also meant the abuse of drinking alcohol, inhalants and many
more. Drug addiction is so serious that needs to be addressed immediately especially since it is
so prevalent in our country. It will affect more people and put more lives in danger, especially the
youth since they are the ones who are always curious to try new things. Other factors that affect
the widespread of this is through peer pressure. Drug addiction can also be defined as a chronic
disorder that requires medical attention. In addition to that, drug addiction is also the result of
lack of behavioural health assessment. I think people nowadays do not really show proper
tending to their behavioural, emotional, and mental state. Therefore, to prevent the risk of the
illegal utilization of drugs in general, the government issued a law that will serve as an
eye-opener for everyone especially the youth, including me, that will prevent a large exhibition
or usage of dangerous drugs to our society.

To summarize, drug addiction is one of the most timely and relevant issues that is evident
in our society nowadays. This addiction is a severe mental condition that torments a person in all
aspects of their lives. It doesn't only affect the physical well-being of a person but, as well as,
their emotional state, and mental cognition. Drug abuse poses a great threat to our society since it
will increase the number of crimes, or illegal deeds. It also affects our well-being negatively as it
destroys our Central Nervous System (CNS). There are factors that contribute to drug abuse. One
of the most commonly known factors is poverty. Aside from that, peer pressure also contributes
to one of the factors that resulted in abuse.

To conclude, one way to prevent the widespread illegal usage of drugs is through
education. As for me, this program will help everyone to change their perspective of everyone,
especially the youth and to disseminate information regarding drugs, its disadvantages,
consequences, and such. Moreover, drug education protects everyone, particularly the youth to
avoid the dangerous and disruptive effect of illegal drugs on our bodies. Prior to that, drugs
affect the functionality of our brain, and it also affects the emotional, social, and mental
development of the user.
