Reflection paper on the theme of alienation in The

Metamorphosis
By: Ma.Gemarie K Villanueva
Franz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis” is a novel that tells about
a man named Gregor Samsa, who wakes up on day and finds
himself turned into a giant insect. He has no single idea why it
happens to him. Gregor once a hardworking travelling salesman,
he work tirelessly in his miserable job just to pay off his father’s
debt and support his family. But after what happened to him, his
family got horrified and his father become aggressive to him.
From being a provider, he slowly became a burden for his family
and becomes alienated from him.
As for me, “The Metamorphosis” is a powerful and painful
story that tells how a sudden change can make someone useless
to everyone. During Gregor’s transformation, he’s unable to work
or even support his family anymore. I believe Being forgotten or
being considered as a burden is the worst feeling a person can
ever feel. I feel sad for Gregor that they just stopped caring for
him completely and made me think that maybe he is just only
important because he can provide for them. This makes him feel
worthless and forgotten. His family, who relied on him for money,
grows distant as they find him more of a burden than help.
This story speaks not only about the fear of one’s purpose in
life but also our physical change on how our society can accept
us whether we are worthless or useful. Gregor’s journey in life
wasn’t easy at all, until his last breath, the people that his always
thinking of is his family. It just simply shows us that we need to
appreciate people for who they are, not just what they can offer.
