Unit 1, Unit Review, Ex. A

Conversation 1
A: Is that woman over there Joanne Fergusen?
B: No, that’s Claire Vigneau. Joanne’s not here today.
A: Who’s Claire Vigneau?
B: She’s the new manager.
A: Really? Where’s she from?
B: She’s from France.

Conversation 2
A: Who’s that over there?
B: His name’s Lucas Ferreira.
A: What does he do?
B: They say he’s an artist.
A: Is he from around here?
B: No. He’s from Porto Alegre—in Brazil.

Conversation 3 (Marco = Italian)

Lyla: Are you from around here?
Marco: No. I live in Miami actually. The name’s Marco. Marco Bianchi.
Lyla: Hi, Marco. I’m Lyla. What do you do?
Marco: I’m a photographer. I work for the Miami News.
Lyla: You’re not from Miami originally, though, are you?
Marco: As a matter fact, I was born and raised in Rome, in Italy.

Conversation 4
A: Is that Diane Brenner?
B: Yes, it is.
A: I heard she’s an accountant.
B: That’s right.
A: Is it true she’s from Australia?
B: That’s what I hear.

Unit 2, Unit Review, Ex. A

Conversation 1
A: I’m in the mood for some live music tonight.
B: Like what?
A: How about some rock? There’s a great concert at Rock City.
B: Who’s playing?
A: The Rockmen.
B: Really? What time’s the show?
A: 10:30.
B: Hmm. On second thought, that’s past my bedtime for a weeknight. I’m working
tomorrow.

Conversation 2 (B = Japanese)
A: There’s a talk about Martin Yu at the Clark Street Gallery.
B: Who’s Martin Yu?
A: You know! He’s the photographer who makes those beautiful flower photos.
B: Oh, yes. Of course! I’m a huge fan.
A: Me, too! Would you like to go?
B: What time’s the talk?
A: It’s at 7:00.
B: OK! Let’s go. We can meet at 6:30 for a cup of tea at Tea Town next door.

Conversation 3
A: What are you doing tonight?
B: Nothing much, why?
A: Well, I have an extra ticket to Twelfth Night.
B: Twelfth Night? Isn’t that a play by William Shakespeare?
A: Yes, it is. Want to go? It’s at 8:00 at the University Club.
B: I’m not sure. Shakespeare’s not really my style. I’m sorry!
A: No problem. I can ask my sister. She loves Shakespeare.

Unit 3, Unit Review, Ex. A

Conversation 2
A: What’s wrong? Do you have a headache?
B: Actually, no. It’s my back.
A: Maybe you should see a doctor.
B: I don’t think so. It’s nothing serious.

Conversation 3
A: Ah-choo!
B: Bless you!
A: Ugh. I feel terrible today.
B: Do you have a fever?
A: No, I don’t. But I feel awful.

Conversation 4
A: Ooh. My head hurts!
B: Oh, no. I’m sorry.
A: I just can’t work today.
B: Well, you shouldn’t. You should take a nap.
A: That’s a good idea.
B: And feel better!

Unit 4, Unit Review, Ex. A

Host: We’re talking today with Lucille, who comes from a family of three kids and . . .
Lucille, I hear you have a younger brother.
Lucille: Yes. Five years younger.
Host: And a sister.
Lucille: That’s right.
Host: And you and your sister are twins. Is that right?
Lucille: Yes. She was born eight minutes before me. I was the little one.
Host: Well, tell us a little bit about your sister. What’s her name, by the way?
Lucille: Her name’s Laura.
Host: Laura! So, Lucille. Do you look alike?
Lucille: We do, actually. A lot of people can’t tell us apart.
Host: Really?
Lucille: But I wear glasses all the time. She only wears them for reading.
Host: I see. Some people say twins like the same things. Is that true for you two?
Lucille: Well, we both love Mexican food. We always have the same thing when we
go to restaurants. And let’s see . . . we like the same kinds of movies.
Host: Anything else?

Lucille: Well, this is kind of funny. Sometimes we each buy almost the same clothes.
Not because we want to. It just happens by accident. I go to visit her and
she’s wearing the same shirt I am. It’s always a surprise.
Host: So how are you different from each other?
Lucille: Well, Laura’s a great dancer. And me, I can’t dance at all.
Host: Anything else?
Lucille: Let’s see . . . her favorite color is green; mine’s blue. She loves football, and I
love baseball. I could go on and on.
Host: Well, how about musical tastes?
Lucille: Oh, yeah. I love classical music. But she really prefers pop. I actually play the
piano, but she doesn’t play any musical instrument. I’d say she’s really more
of a dancer than a musical person.
Host: And how about your own marriages and families? Are they similar in any
way?
Lucille: Well, we both have two kids. I have a boy and a girl. She has two boys. But
our husbands are completely different. Not at all alike.
Host: Really? Well, thank you, Lucille Kennedy, for talking with us today about you
and your twin sister.
Lucille: Thank you. That was fun.

Unit 5, Unit Review, Ex. A

Conversation 1
A: I feel like something sweet. Do you think the price of the entreé includes dessert?
B: The menu doesn’t say. Just ask.

Conversation 2
A: Mom, there’s nothing in this fridge but veggies.
B: Oh, Caroline. What’s wrong with veggies? They’re so good for you.
A: But I feel like eating something really fatty and salty—like fries.

Conversation 3
A: What do you feel like eating?
B: Actually, I feel like seafood tonight.
A: Well, there’s a fried squid appetizer and grilled fish for a main course.

Unit 6, Unit Review, Ex. A

Conversation 1
A: Oh, no! Not again.
B: What’s wrong?

B: Are you serious? That toilet won’t flush again?

A: Again!

Conversation 2
A: I have a problem. Maybe you can help.
B: Sure, honey. What’s up?
A: It’s so cold in here, and I can’t close the window.
B: The window won’t close? That’s ridiculous. Here I come.
A: Thanks!

Conversation 3
A: Uh-oh.
B: Is something wrong?
A: Totally. I’m in the bathroom. The sink is clogged.
B: You mean the water won’t go down?
A: That’s right. Let me call a plumber.

Conversation 4
A: It’s freezing in here. I need a coat!
B: You’re right. What’s wrong?
A: It’s the air conditioner. It won’t turn off.
B: Let me see if I can help.

Unit 7, Unit Review, Ex. A

Speaker 1 (Russian)
You want to hear about my flight? Oh, it was terrible. First of all, there was a terrible
storm. It was very bumpy. Everyone was scared, including me. The children were crying.
I was frightened we weren’t going to arrive at all! I never want to go on a flight like that
again!

Speaker 2 (French)
The weather was just amazing. It was warm and sunny every day. In the mornings, we
went swimming. We had very nice lunches, which we ate on the beach. After lunch each
day, we slept for about an hour, and then we went shopping or walked around the town.
In the evenings, we just walked along the beach and watched the sun go down.

Speaker 3 (Australian English)

Let’s see. I left my house about 4:00. I drove up the coast and it was really scenic. There
weren’t a lot of cars so the trip was pretty fast. I got there at about 5:15. It was an easy
trip.

Speaker 4 (Korean)
Well, we took the train there this time instead of flying. The trip was long, but very nice.
We had big windows so we could see everything. The mountains were just beautiful,
especially in the early morning and late afternoon. And for part of the trip, we could
actually see the water. I loved it. Just beautiful!

Unit 8, Unit Review, Ex. A

Conversation 1
A: Can you help me?
B: Certainly, ma’am.
A: Do you have these flats in a smaller size? These are a little too large.
B: I’ll check and be right back.

Conversation 2
A: Excuse me.
B: Yes, sir?
A: I’m looking for a light jacket.
B: Oh, then you want to go to the third floor.
A: Actually, I want it for the tennis court. It’s getting a little cool these days.
B: Oh, I’m sorry. In that case, let me show you what we have.

Conversation 3 (A = Russian)
A: Excuse me. I’m looking for ladies’ purses.
B: Right over here, ma’am.
A: Oh! I didn’t see them. And, good! They’re right next to the belts. I need a belt for my
husband, too.

Conversation 4 (A = Brazilian Portuguese)

A: Hi. I’m looking for a new coat.
B: Certainly.
A: Are those over there for women?
B: Actually, those are the men’s coats. But we have some nice ones for women right
over here. Or are you looking for something that isn’t quite so heavy?
A: Nothing is too heavy for me. I’m always cold! I’m going to Boston next month. They
say it’s like a fridge there in January.

Conversation 5
A: Can you help me?
B: Of course! What are you looking for?
A: I need shorts and T-shirts for my daughter.

B: How old is she?

A: Ten.
B: Then you’re definitely in the right department. Would you like me to show you
T-shirts first?
A: Thanks.

Unit 9, Unit Review, Ex. A

Conversation 1
Peter: Hello?
Karen: Hi, Peter. This is Karen. Want to play tennis this afternoon?
Peter: Totally, but it depends on the time. I’m kind of busy until noon.
Karen: How would 4:30 be?
Peter: Perfect. Where should we meet? At the courts in the park, or at the club?
Karen: Let’s meet at the club. The weather’s good now, but they say it might rain this
afternoon.

Conversation 2
A: What a gorgeous day!
B: It really is. Do you want to play a round of golf this morning?
A: I’m sorry. I can’t. My sister and I have to buy a birthday gift for my mom at the mall
this morning. Mom’s party is tonight, and we don’t have much time.
B: Hey, please tell your mom happy birthday!
A: Will do! Hey, I have an idea. Why don’t we get together at the mall for lunch and
play golf this afternoon?
B: Unfortunately, I can’t do that. I’m having lunch with my mom.
A: No worries. Can you play later in the afternoon? The party doesn’t start until 8:00.
I could play anytime between 2:00 and 6:00.
B: You know what? That sounds like a plan. Meet you at the golf course at 2:00, OK?
A: OK!

Unit 10, Unit Review, Ex. A

Conversation 1
A: So, what are you doing this weekend?
B: Me? I’m going to visit my great grandmother.
A: Your great grandmother?
B: Yes. It’s her birthday. She’s going to be 96 years old on Sunday.
A: Fantastic!
B: There’s going to be a big party at her house with all my extended family.

Conversation 2
A: So what’s Pete Benson going to do in the next five years?
B: What? You mean me? Seriously?
A: Yeah, seriously. Do you have any plans?
B: I guess I do. I’d really like to change careers in the next few years.
A: Cool! What would you like to do?
B: Well, I’m really interested in medicine.
A: No kidding! So you’d like to become a doctor?
B: I’m not sure. Maybe a nurse. I’m going to study medicine for a year so I can decide.

Conversation 3
A: My wife and I are going to have a dinner for our friends and colleagues at our place
next Friday. Can you come?
B: I’d love to! Can I bring anything?
A: Oh, that’s not necessary.
B: But I’d really like to help.
A: Well, could you possibly bring a nice salad?
B: Of course. My pleasure. How about a pasta salad?
A: That sounds great!
