Conversation 2
A: Who’s that over there?
B: His name’s Lucas Ferreira.
A: What does he do?
B: They say he’s an artist.
A: Is he from around here?
B: No. He’s from Porto Alegre—in Brazil.
Conversation 4
A: Is that Diane Brenner?
B: Yes, it is.
A: I heard she’s an accountant.
B: That’s right.
A: Is it true she’s from Australia?
B: That’s what I hear.
Conversation 2 (B = Japanese)
A: There’s a talk about Martin Yu at the Clark Street Gallery.
B: Who’s Martin Yu?
A: You know! He’s the photographer who makes those beautiful flower photos.
B: Oh, yes. Of course! I’m a huge fan.
A: Me, too! Would you like to go?
B: What time’s the talk?
A: It’s at 7:00.
B: OK! Let’s go. We can meet at 6:30 for a cup of tea at Tea Town next door.
Conversation 3
A: What are you doing tonight?
B: Nothing much, why?
A: Well, I have an extra ticket to Twelfth Night.
B: Twelfth Night? Isn’t that a play by William Shakespeare?
A: Yes, it is. Want to go? It’s at 8:00 at the University Club.
B: I’m not sure. Shakespeare’s not really my style. I’m sorry!
A: No problem. I can ask my sister. She loves Shakespeare.
Conversation 2
A: What’s wrong? Do you have a headache?
B: Actually, no. It’s my back.
A: Maybe you should see a doctor.
B: I don’t think so. It’s nothing serious.
Conversation 3
A: Ah-choo!
B: Bless you!
A: Ugh. I feel terrible today.
B: Do you have a fever?
A: No, I don’t. But I feel awful.
Conversation 4
A: Ooh. My head hurts!
B: Oh, no. I’m sorry.
A: I just can’t work today.
B: Well, you shouldn’t. You should take a nap.
A: That’s a good idea.
B: And feel better!
Lucille: Well, this is kind of funny. Sometimes we each buy almost the same clothes.
Not because we want to. It just happens by accident. I go to visit her and
she’s wearing the same shirt I am. It’s always a surprise.
Host: So how are you different from each other?
Lucille: Well, Laura’s a great dancer. And me, I can’t dance at all.
Host: Anything else?
Lucille: Let’s see . . . her favorite color is green; mine’s blue. She loves football, and I
love baseball. I could go on and on.
Host: Well, how about musical tastes?
Lucille: Oh, yeah. I love classical music. But she really prefers pop. I actually play the
piano, but she doesn’t play any musical instrument. I’d say she’s really more
of a dancer than a musical person.
Host: And how about your own marriages and families? Are they similar in any
way?
Lucille: Well, we both have two kids. I have a boy and a girl. She has two boys. But
our husbands are completely different. Not at all alike.
Host: Really? Well, thank you, Lucille Kennedy, for talking with us today about you
and your twin sister.
Lucille: Thank you. That was fun.
Conversation 2
A: Mom, there’s nothing in this fridge but veggies.
B: Oh, Caroline. What’s wrong with veggies? They’re so good for you.
A: But I feel like eating something really fatty and salty—like fries.
Conversation 3
A: What do you feel like eating?
B: Actually, I feel like seafood tonight.
A: Well, there’s a fried squid appetizer and grilled fish for a main course.
Conversation 2
A: I have a problem. Maybe you can help.
B: Sure, honey. What’s up?
A: It’s so cold in here, and I can’t close the window.
B: The window won’t close? That’s ridiculous. Here I come.
A: Thanks!
Conversation 3
A: Uh-oh.
B: Is something wrong?
A: Totally. I’m in the bathroom. The sink is clogged.
B: You mean the water won’t go down?
A: That’s right. Let me call a plumber.
Conversation 4
A: It’s freezing in here. I need a coat!
B: You’re right. What’s wrong?
A: It’s the air conditioner. It won’t turn off.
B: Let me see if I can help.
Speaker 2 (French)
The weather was just amazing. It was warm and sunny every day. In the mornings, we
went swimming. We had very nice lunches, which we ate on the beach. After lunch each
day, we slept for about an hour, and then we went shopping or walked around the town.
In the evenings, we just walked along the beach and watched the sun go down.
Speaker 4 (Korean)
Well, we took the train there this time instead of flying. The trip was long, but very nice.
We had big windows so we could see everything. The mountains were just beautiful,
especially in the early morning and late afternoon. And for part of the trip, we could
actually see the water. I loved it. Just beautiful!
Conversation 2
A: Excuse me.
B: Yes, sir?
A: I’m looking for a light jacket.
B: Oh, then you want to go to the third floor.
A: Actually, I want it for the tennis court. It’s getting a little cool these days.
B: Oh, I’m sorry. In that case, let me show you what we have.
Conversation 3 (A = Russian)
A: Excuse me. I’m looking for ladies’ purses.
B: Right over here, ma’am.
A: Oh! I didn’t see them. And, good! They’re right next to the belts. I need a belt for my
husband, too.
Conversation 5
A: Can you help me?
B: Of course! What are you looking for?
A: I need shorts and T-shirts for my daughter.

Conversation 2
A: What a gorgeous day!
B: It really is. Do you want to play a round of golf this morning?
A: I’m sorry. I can’t. My sister and I have to buy a birthday gift for my mom at the mall
this morning. Mom’s party is tonight, and we don’t have much time.
B: Hey, please tell your mom happy birthday!
A: Will do! Hey, I have an idea. Why don’t we get together at the mall for lunch and
play golf this afternoon?
B: Unfortunately, I can’t do that. I’m having lunch with my mom.
A: No worries. Can you play later in the afternoon? The party doesn’t start until 8:00.
I could play anytime between 2:00 and 6:00.
B: You know what? That sounds like a plan. Meet you at the golf course at 2:00, OK?
A: OK!
Conversation 2
A: So what’s Pete Benson going to do in the next five years?
B: What? You mean me? Seriously?
A: Yeah, seriously. Do you have any plans?
B: I guess I do. I’d really like to change careers in the next few years.
A: Cool! What would you like to do?
B: Well, I’m really interested in medicine.
A: No kidding! So you’d like to become a doctor?
B: I’m not sure. Maybe a nurse. I’m going to study medicine for a year so I can decide.
Conversation 3
A: My wife and I are going to have a dinner for our friends and colleagues at our place
next Friday. Can you come?
B: I’d love to! Can I bring anything?
A: Oh, that’s not necessary.
B: But I’d really like to help.
A: Well, could you possibly bring a nice salad?
B: Of course. My pleasure. How about a pasta salad?
A: That sounds great!
