Netball skills project

1. Introduction to netball:

What is netball?
 Netball is a team sport and is primarily played by
women, though men’s and mixed teams exist. The game
is usually played on a rectangular court divided into
thirds, with each team consisting of seven players
assigned to specific positions that dictate where they
can move on the court.

Basic rules of netball

1. Players cannot dribble or run with the ball. When
they receive the ball, they must remain stationary or
they can pivot on one foot and pass or shoot within
three seconds

2. Players cannot push, shove, or make deliberate

physical contact with opponents. A penalty is
awarded for contact.

3. Defending players cannot block a shot or pass if they

are not a meter apart from the player with the ball.
4. Players are allowed to pivot on one foot but cannot
move or drag the other foot. This is known as the
footwork rule.

2. Key skills in Netball

 5 key skills required in netball

1. Passing: Passing in netball is accurately getting the

ball to your teammate who is in motion. Common
types of passes include chest passes, overhead
passes, and bounce passes. A good practice to
improve this skill is drills, both two handed and single
hand.

2. Shooting: Shooting in netball involves a one-handed

shot, which requires a strong shooting arm and a
supportive non-shooting hand. For attacking players
like the Goal Shooter (GS) and Goal Attack (GA),
accurate shooting is essential. A good practice to
improve this skill is practicing shooting with
teammates and practice balancing and keeping a
steady stance.

3. Defending: In netball, defending is to gain

possession of the ball from the attacking team
through an interception. Defenders need the ability to
closely mark their opponents, keeping them from
receiving the ball or taking shots. Defenders must
also be able to read the game and react quickly to
disrupt the opposing team's play without committing
fouls. A good practice to improve this skill is drills
like shadowing.
4. Footwork: Footwork refers to how a player steps,
lands, and pivots when in possession of the ball. Since
players can't run with the ball, they need excellent
footwork to pivot on one foot, changing direction
while looking for a pass. A good practice to improve
this skill is drills such as hoop exercise, left and right
drill and the ice cream drill

5. Positioning: Players need strong spatial awareness

to make quick decisions about where to pass, where
to move, and how to create space for effective play

3. Game tactics and strategies

 3 basic tactics and strategies used in netball

1. Triangle attack
- A triangle attack is a common offensive tactic
where three players (often the Wing Attack, Goal
Attack, and Center) form a triangle to pass the ball
around defenders and create space for a shooting
opportunity.
- How it works: The three players work together in
a triangular formation, passing the ball quickly and
rotating positions to confuse defenders. This
movement creates gaps in the defense, allowing a
clear pass into the shooting circle.
- Advantage: The triangular passing patterns help
maintain ball possession and keep the defense on
the back foot, creating easier opportunities for the
Goal Shooter and Goal Attack to receive the ball in
favorable shooting positions
2. Zone defense
- Instead of marking an individual player, each
defender is responsible for covering a specific area
or "zone" of the court. This tactic makes it difficult
for the attacking team to move the ball forward, as
they will encounter defenders in every zone.
- How it works: Defenders stay within their
designated zones and focus on intercepting passes
rather than following a particular opponent. This
can create confusion for the attacking team and
disrupt their rhythm.
- Advantage: Zone defense is especially effective in
crowded areas like the shooting circle, where it
helps to cut off passing options and crowd the
space, forcing the opposition to make mistakes.
3. Quick Passing/Front Cuts
- This tactic involves fast and accurate passing
combined with sharp movement, such as front cuts,
to outmaneuver defenders. Players make quick,
short passes and immediately reposition
themselves to receive the ball again.
- How it works: After passing the ball, players make
a sudden move in front of their defenders (a front
cut) to create separation and receive the next pass.
This fast-paced ball movement forces the defense
to adjust quickly, often leading to openings for
attacking players.
- Advantage: Quick passing combined with sharp
movement allows the attacking team to break down
tight defenses and quickly advance the ball into the
shooting circle.
4. Personal reflection and development
My strengths: Defending, intercepting, catching the
ball and Footwork
My weaknesses: Not being a meter
apart(obstructing), Not staying with my person,
getting tired easily and opening up
How I can improve this; 1. Practice my skills with my
teammates
2. Know the game
3. Drills and exercise
