ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I want to sincerely thank Mrs. Sangeetha my English teacher for
all their help and support during the course of assignment .Their
insightful criticism and recommendations enabled me to sharpen
my writing abilities and completed this project.
I also want to express my gratitude to my friends and classmates
for sharing their perspective on the story topic and characters
with me .These contributions have helped me to develop my
thoughts significantly.
Last but not least, I would want to express my gratitude to ‘on
face of it’ author Susan Hill for penning such a compelling and
thought provoking tale that has motivated me to learn about the
topic of equal rights for handicapped people and we should
respect their opinions as well .
ON THE FACE OF IT
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Dame Susan Elizabeth Hill,
Lady Wells DBE (born 5
February 1942) is an English
author of fiction and non-fiction
works. Her novels include The
Woman in Black, which has
been adapted for stage and
screen, The Mist in the Mirror,
and I'm the King of the Castle,
for which she received
the Somerset Maugham
Award in 1971. She also won
the Whitbread Novel Award in
1972 for The Bird of Night,
which was also shortlisted for
the Booker Prize.

She was appointed Commander of the Order of the British

Empire (CBE) in the 2012 Birthday Honors[1][2] and Dame
Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2020
Birthday Honors,[3][4] both for services to literature.
ABOUT ON THE FACE IT:
On the face of it is a play written by Susan Hill two individuals
who meet unfortunate odds but develop different attitudes while
facing those odds. The two persons are Derry, a young acid
attack victim and Mr. Lamb a much older man who man who
lost his limb in a blast.

Through the contrast in the outlook of both these survivors, the

author tries to create a tale of overcoming odds and seemingly
insurmountable difficulties and retain hope in the ability to find
happiness
CHARACTER SKETCH
1. DERRY:
Derry is a little boy who has his own insecurities. He is under-
confident. He is lonely, withdrawn, and likes to stay away from
people. He is pessimistic and does not have a positive approach
towards life. He is a thoughtful and good kid who listens to
Mr. Lamb, spends time with him, and analyses that he has not
been living a good life by creating a societal gap in his life.

2. Mr. Lamb:
He is an optimistic man who cares about people and wants to
bring a change in the lives of people. Despite his tinned leg, he
talks to everyone with a smiling face and is always open for a
talk. He keeps the curtains of his house open to represent that he
is open to everyone who wants to have a conversation. He is
empathetic, positive, and kind. He teaches Derry that his flaws
are beautiful and worth celebrating. The scars on his face should
not be the reason for him being lonely in his life. He should be
talking to people, living a socially rich life, and start looking at
life with a positive attitude.
THEME
On the Face of it summary, the theme revolves around the idea
that people with physical disabilities suffer from loneliness and
mental pain. The play gives us an insight into how appearances
are deceptive. The theme of play is the consequence of physical
impairment on the affected person’s body, mind and soul.
SUMMARY
A high school kid entering a nursery. His face is scorched on
one side because of a mishap when a corrosive fell on half of his
face. He has gone there to conceal himself as he fears
confronting individuals. He fears being prodded by others for
having such a face. However, when he enters, he discovers
somebody effectively presents there. He attempts to leave the
spot, yet he is halted by the elderly person, Mr. Sheep, the
nursery's proprietor. Derry feels remorseful for entering the
nursery without consent. Mr. Sheep invites him and instructs
him not to leave due to his essence.

Derry needs to leave as he might suspect individuals don't care

for his face, and in addition, they get terrified of his looks. Be
that as it may, Mr. Sheep demands him to remain there. They go
into a discussion about how nobody loves Derry and how he
loathes individuals carrying on like this with him. Mr. Sheep
attempts to reassure him. He discloses to him that he has a tin
leg, and children ridicule him. Still, he isn't discouraged and
makes an incredible effort. The two of them talk about different
things, and this prompts disclosure of Derry's dread,
melancholy, and scorn about his being in such a condition.
In any case, Mr. Sheep continues instructing him to think about
the positive things. Before long, they become companions, and
Mr. Sheep requests that he help him in culling the crab apples of
his nursery. Derry discloses to him that he had overcome much
from his home and hadn't enlightened anything regarding this to
his mom. Mr. Sheep instructs him to take authorization from his
mom. Derry thinks that it's troublesome, and this prompts a little
squabble between the two. Finally, Derry discloses to him that
he would return in the wake of taking his mom's authorization.
His mom doesn't need him to return; however, he returns again
To satisfy his guarantee. Then Mr. Sheep ascended the stepping
stool all alone to cull the crab apples as he was certain that
Derry would not return. He was crippled, and it was hard for
him to climb. Derry, then again, re-visited the nursery to support
him. At the point when he enters the nursery, he sees Mr. Sheep
lying on the ground.

Derry makes a decent attempt to make him move; however, he

didn't get any reaction from him. He then comes to realize that
he is dead and starts crying.
MORAL OF THE STORY

The moral of the play is very loud and clear. The physically
disabled should focus on the brighter side of life and not to
brood over the shortcomings. The society should accept them as
they are and expand their social interactions. In this way they
