Course Description:
This course covers the following topics:
Real number system, Complex Numbers, De Moivre’s Theorem and its Applications, Simple Cartesian
Curves, Functions and Graphs, Symmetrical Properties, Curve Tracing, Limit and Continuity,
Differentiation of Functions. Derivative as Slope of Tangent to a Curve and as Rate of Change,
Application to Tangent and Normal, Linearization, Maxima/Minima and Point of Inflexion, Taylor and
Maclaurin Expansions and their convergence, Integral as Anti-derivative, Indefinite Integration of
Simple Functions. Methods of Integration: Integration by Substitution, by Parts, and by Partial Fractions,
Definite Integral as Limit of a Sum, Application to Area, Arc Length, Volume and Surface of Revolution.
Course Objectives:
To develop understanding of the concepts of calculus and analytical geometry with emphasis on
applications in Engineering.

At the end of the course the students will be able to: PLO BT Level*
CLO1 define fundamental concepts of calculus and analytical 1 C-1
geometry.
CLO2 illustrate the physical interpretation and applications of 1 C-2
differentiation and integration.

Grading Policy:
Quiz Policy: The quizzes may be unannounced and normally last for ten minutes. The question framed is
to test the concepts involved in last few lectures.
Assignment Policy: The class representatives (CRs) will be the primary source for announcements and submitting
assignments.
