Module 2 Problems

The document calculates the daily energy consumption of various electrical devices in a residential building, totaling 3.26 kWh for the first set of devices. It also analyzes a single-phase induction motor's active, reactive, and apparent power, along with its power factor. Additionally, it computes the total connected load, daily energy consumption, and monthly electricity bill for another set of appliances, resulting in a monthly bill of 1480.5 rupees.

1.

A residential building uses following devices in a day A) 4 tube lights 40Watts working
for 5 hours a day. B) 2 filament lamps of 60 Watts working for 8 hours a day. C) Water
pump of 0.5 kilo watts working for 3 hours a day. Calculate energy consumption per
day

device No of Power Power Working Energy

appliance rating in rating in hours consumption
watts Kwatts per day
Tube light 4 40 .04 5 4*.04*5=0.8Kwh
lamp 2 60 .06 8 2*.06*8=.96Kwh
Water 1 500 .5 3 .5*3=1.5Kwh
pump

Energy consumption per day = 3.26KWh =3.26 unit

2. A 700W, 5A single phase induction motor is connected to a 230V supply. Find the
following parameters. (i) Active power (iii) Apparent power (ii) Reactive power (iv)
Power factor
Given data V=230 V, I=5A, single phase power= VI Cos θ=700 W

(i) Active power = VI Cos θ = 700 W

(ii) Power factor= Cosθ =700 /(230*5)=.608

Sin θ =√ 1−cos θ 2 =√ 1−.6082 =.79

(i) Apparent power = VI Sin θ=230*5*.79=908 VAR

(ii) Reactive power= VI = 230*5 = 1150 V

3. A residential Building has the following electrical load and appliances are operated as
per the load details given. Calculate the following.
i. Total Connected Load in kW.
ii. Energy Consumption in kWh in one day.
iii. Monthly Electricity bill for a month of June at the rate of Rs. 7 per kWh.

Sl no Load details

1. 5Tube lights each 60 watts working 8 hours/day

2. An electric Iron 750 Watts working 1 hour/day

3. 4 fans each 60 watts working 10 hrs/day

4. A Mixer- 750 Watts working 2 hours/da

device No of Power Power Working Energy
appliance rating in rating in hours/day consumption per
watts(W) Kwatts(KW) t day
Tube light 5 60 .06 8 5*.06*8=2.4kwh
Iron box 1 750 .750 1 1*.750*1=.75kwh
Fan 4 60 .06 10 4*.06*10=2.4kwh
mixer 1 750 .750 2 1*.750*2=1.5kwh

Total load in KW=.06*5+.750+.06*4+.750=2.04kw

Energy Consumption in kWh in one day. =2.4+.75+2.4+1.5 = 7.05 KWh

Monthly Electricity bill for a month of June=7.05*30*7=1480.5 rupees
