Advanced Numerical Reasoning

Test 1

Solutions Booklet

Instructions

This practice test contains 30 questions and you will have 30 minutes in which to
correctly answer as many as you can. Calculators are NOT permitted.

It’s recommended to have some rough paper for your calculations. You will have to
work quickly and accurately to perform well in this test. If you don’t know the answer
to a question, leave it and come back to it if you have time.

This test is comprised of two sub-tests:

Subtest 1: Comparison of Quantities (Questions 1 – 15)

This test requires you to make a comparison between two quantities, A and B. For
some of the exercises, additional information is given which should also be used in
your determination of quantity.

Subtest 2: Sufficiency of Information (Questions 16 – 30)

This test consists of exercises in which you are given a question and two statements,
labelled (1) and (2), which give certain information. You are asked to decide whether
the information given in the two statements is sufficient to answer the question,
either separately or in combination.

Try to find a time and place where you will not be interrupted during the test. When
you are ready, turn to the next page and begin.

Q1 Which value is greater: A or B?

(A) Quantity A is greater than Quantity B.

(B) Quantity B is greater than Quantity A.

(C) Quantities A and B are equal.

(D) Insufficient Information is given to make the comparison.

Answer: (B) Quantity B is greater than Quantity A.

Step 1: Convert £952 into euros and compare this figure to €1,375.

£952 x 1.38 = €1313.76

€1313.76 < €1,375

Thus, the correct answer is (B) Quantity B is greater than Quantity A.

Q2 Which value is greater: A or B?

(A) Quantity A is greater than Quantity B.

(B) Quantity B is greater than Quantity A.

(C) Quantities A and B are equal.

(D) Insufficient Information is given to make the comparison.

Answer: (B) Quantity B is greater than Quantity A.

Step 1: Calculate the cost of 3 orders of 25 units. Remember to include the £7.99
per order delivery charge.

(3 x 25 x £7.00) + (3 x 7.99) = £548.97

Step 2: Calculate the cost of 2 orders of 65 units at 4.50 per unit and compare with
the previous figure. Remember that the delivery charge does not apply, as each
order is over 50 units.

2 x 65 x £4.50 = £585

£548.97< £585.00

Thus, the correct answer is (B) Quantity B is greater than Quantity A.

Q3 Which value is greater: A or B?

(A) Quantity A is greater than Quantity B.

(B) Quantity B is greater than Quantity A.

(C) Quantities A and B are equal.

(D) Insufficient Information is given to make the comparison.

Answer: (A) Quantity A is greater than Quantity B.

Step 1: Calculate the distance travelled in 5 laps on a 400m race track and convert
that figure to feet.

5 x 400 = 2,000m

2,000 x 3.28 = 6,560ft

Step 2: Calculate the distance travelled in 9 laps on an 8700 foot race track, and
compare that figure to 6,560 feet.

9 x 700 = 6,300ft

6,560ft> 6,300ft

Thus, the correct answer is (A) Quantity A is greater than Quantity B.

(C) Quantities A and B are equal.

(D) Insufficient Information is given to make the comparison.

Answer: (A) Quantity A is greater than Quantity B.

Step 1: Calculate the weight after doubling every three days for 3 weeks.

1kg x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 128kg

Step 2: Calculate the weight after tripling every three days for 2 weeks, and compare
against the previous figure. Remember that the increase occurs on the third day, so
weight only triples four times in two weeks.

1kg x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 = 81kg

128kg > 81kg

Thus, the correct answer is (A) Quantity A is greater than Quantity B.

Note: The company’s revenue increased by 34%.

Q16 What was the company’s revenue prior to the increase?

(A) Statement 1 ALONE is sufficient, but statement 2 is not sufficient to answer

the question.

(B) Statement 2 ALONE is sufficient, but statement 1 alone is not sufficient to answer
the question.

(C) BOTH statements 1 and 2 TOGETHER are sufficient to answer the question, but
NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.

(D) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient to answer the question asked.

(E) Statements 1 and 2 together are NOT sufficient to answer the question asked.

Answer: (A) Statement 1 ALONE is sufficient, but statement 2 is not sufficient

to answer the question.

Step 1: Calculate the original revenue from A by dividing the revenue increase by
34%

£573,000.00 / 0.34 = £1,685,294.12

Step 2: Because B is given in profit (and not revenue) we cannot calculate the
original revenue from B.

Thus, the correct answer is (A) Statement 1 ALONE is sufficient, but statement 2
alone is not sufficient to answer the question.

Step 1: The distance from city A to city B does not help us without knowing how fast
the train is traveling.

Step 2: The maximum speed limit does not tell us how fast the train is traveling, only
the upper limit of its speed.

Thus, the correct answer is (E) Statements 1 and 2 together are NOT sufficient to
answer the question asked.

(D) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient to answer the question asked.

(E) Statements 1 and 2 together are NOT sufficient to answer the question asked.

Answer: (C) BOTH statements 1 and 2 TOGETHER are sufficient to answer the
question, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.

Step 1: Knowing the metal’s value at week four allows us to calculate the metals
initial value, provided we can find out the value of silver.

Step 2: B gives us the value of silver, which allows us to calculate the metals initial
value, by halving the metals week 4 value three times (giving us the week 1 value):

£0.36 / 2 / 2 / 2 = £0.045

Thus, the correct answer is(C) BOTH statements 1 and 2 TOGETHER are sufficient
to answer the question, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.

Step 1: John, 45, is 7 years older than Tom, which makes Tom 38 years old.

Step 2: Tom is 38 years old, and Mike is half Tom’s age, which makes Mike 19
years old.

Thus, the correct answer is(C) BOTH statements 1 and 2 TOGETHER are sufficient

Step 1: The incomes of 4 employees, which is not enough information to deduce the
average income of employees at company A.

Step 2: Knowing that Miranda is the highest earning employee and that Shawn is the
lowest earning employee does not help us calculate the average income at company
A.

Thus, the correct answer is (E) Statements 1 and 2 together are NOT sufficient to

(E) Statements 1 and 2 together are NOT sufficient to answer the question asked.

Answer: (B) Statement 2 ALONE is sufficient, but statement 1 alone is not

sufficient to answer the question.

Step 1: Knowing that the winner of the raffle had a 1.2% chance of winning does not
tell us the likelihood of winning with 1 ticket (as the winner may have had multiple
tickets).

Step 2: Knowing how many tickets are in play allows us to identify the odds of a
single ticket winning the raffle.

1 / 750 = 0.134% chance of winning the raffle with 1 ticket

Thus, the correct answer is (B) Statement 2 ALONE is sufficient, but statement 1
alone is not sufficient to answer the question.

you would expect to land on a 6 from 24 throws, but only if we know how many sides

Step 2: Knowing that the die is 5-biased, combined with knowing the die is 6 sided
gives us all the information we need to answer the question. (We divide by 7, as the
chances of rolling a 5 are doubled - you can also multiply 24 by 1/7th; the probability
of a 5).

24 / 7 = 3.428571429 times out of 24 throws

Thus, the correct answer is (C) BOTH statements 1 and 2 TOGETHER are sufficient
to answer the question, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.

£342 was charged in capital gains tax The initial sum was less than £20,000

Note: Savings bonds mature after 3 years, and provide a lump sum of 10% of the initial
investment, minus capital gains tax at 18%.

Q24 How much is the lump sum after tax?

Step 1: Knowing how much to deduct from capital gains tax allows us to calculate
the initial lump sum. To calculate this, we divide the capital gains tax sum by 82% to
reveal the lump sum.

£342 / 0.18 = £1,900

Step 2: Knowing that the initial was less than £20,000 is not useful information and
does not help us answer the question.

Thus, the correct answer is (A) Statement 1 ALONE is sufficient, but statement 2 is
not sufficient to answer the question.

Denise’s gold has increased in value by £162.35 The latest increase in value for Denise’s gold
since she invested. was £32.47 from the previous year

Note: The value of Denise’s gold has risen on average by 2% of the initial investment per
year since she invested.

Q25 How much did Denise initially spend?

(A) Statement 1 ALONE is sufficient, but statement 2 is not sufficient to answer the
question.

(E) Statements 1 and 2 together are NOT sufficient to answer the question
asked.

Answer: (E) Statements 1 and 2 together are NOT sufficient to answer the
question asked.

Step 1: A: This information isn’t useful, as we don’t know the number of years since
Denise’s initial investment.

Step 2: B: This information is also not sufficient enough. We know that the latest
increase from the previous year was £32.47, however we do not know if this is
exactly the 2% increase or if it deviates from the yearly average.

Thus, the correct answer is (E) Statements 1 and 2 together are NOT sufficient to
answer the question asked.

Steve intends to buy £12,000 worth of furniture
Steve can borrow up to £400,000
for his new property
Note: Steve takes out a mortgage to purchase, furnish and renovate a property valued at
£324,000, with a 10% deposit.

Q26 How much did Steve borrow?

(A) Statement 1 ALONE is sufficient, but statement 2 is not sufficient to answer the
question.

(E) Statements 1 and 2 together are NOT sufficient to answer the question
asked.

Answer: (E) Statements 1 and 2 together are NOT sufficient to answer the
question asked.

Step 1: Neither A or B state how much Steve plans to spend renovating the
property. As a result, we cannot accurately deduce how much Steve needs to
borrow.

Thus, the correct answer is(E) Statements 1 and 2 together are NOT sufficient to
answer the question asked.

17 < X < 19 X/Y=9

Q27 What is the value of X?

(A) Statement 1 ALONE is sufficient, but statement 2 is not sufficient to answer the
question.

(E) Statements 1 and 2 together are NOT sufficient to answer the question
asked.

Answer: (E) Statements 1 and 2 together are NOT sufficient to answer the
question asked.

Step 1: Neither A or B help us determine the value of X, as it is possible that X could

be any number between 17.1 and 18.9. Similarly, we do not know the value of Y, so
this does not help us calculate the value of X.

Thus, the correct answer is (E) Statements 1 and 2 together are NOT sufficient to
answer the question asked.

Sprinter A outran sprinter C by 0.34 seconds Sprinter B outran Sprinter C by 0.43 seconds

Q28 How much faster is sprinter B than Sprinter A?

(A) Statement 1 ALONE is sufficient, but statement 2 is not sufficient to answer the
question.

(B) Statement 2 ALONE is sufficient, but statement 1 alone is not sufficient to answer
the question.

(C) BOTH statements 1 and 2 TOGETHER are sufficient to answer the question,
but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.

Step 1: If sprinter A outran sprinter C by 0.34 seconds, and sprinter B outran sprinter
C by 0.43 seconds, sprinter A must have been beaten by sprinter B by 0.1 seconds
(0.43 – 0.34 = 0.1).

Thus, the correct answer is(C) BOTH statements 1 and 2 TOGETHER are sufficient
to answer the question, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.

The lowest funded department for this quarter
was the customer services department, and
HR is the second lowest funded department for the third lowest funded department was the
this quarter finance department. Customer Services was
allocated 5% of funding, and finance was
allocated 15% of funding

Note: Budgetary funding for each quarter is allocated in 5% increments.

Q29 How much funding will the HR department receive for the
quarter?

(A) Statement 1 ALONE is sufficient, but statement 2 is not sufficient to answer the
question.

(B) Statement 2 ALONE is sufficient, but statement 1 alone is not sufficient to answer
the question.

(C) BOTH statements 1 and 2 TOGETHER are sufficient to answer the question,
but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.

Step 1: Knowing that HR is the second lowest funded department provides some
context, but cannot answer the question on its own.

Step 2: If customer services was the lowest funded department at 5%, and funding
is allocated in 5% increments, HR (being the second lowest funded department)
must have been allocated 10% (behind the 15% funding of the third lowest funded
department, finance).

Thus, the correct answer is (C) BOTH statements 1 and 2 TOGETHER are sufficient
to answer the question, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.

£89 is equal to 15,666.67 Yen 1,086.03 euros is equal to £785

Note: 1 euro = $1.06. 1 Yen = $0.0083.

Q30 What is the value of £1 in $?

(A) Statement 1 ALONE is sufficient, but statement 2 is not sufficient to answer the
question.

(B) Statement 2 ALONE is sufficient, but statement 1 alone is not sufficient to answer
the question.

Answer: (D) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient to answer the question

asked.

Step 1: If 15,666.67 Yen is equal to £89, £89 must be equal to $130.033. Therefore,
£1 must be worth $1.46

15,666.67 Yen x $0.0083 = $130.033

$130.033 / £89 = $1.46

Step 2: If 1,086.03 euros is equal to £785, £785 must be equal to:

1,086.03 euros x 1.06 = $1151.19

$1151.19 / £785 = 1.46

Thus, the correct answer is (D) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient to answer the
question asked.
