ASSIGNMENT-I

PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS (MA2L004) B. Tech. (4th Semester)

INSTRUCTIONS: ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

Q1. Form the partial differential equations by eliminating the arbitrary constants a and b from the following
equations:

(a) (x − a)2 + (y − b)2 + z 2 = 1.

(b) 2z = (ax + y)2 + b.

(c) (x − a)2 + (y − b)2 + z 2 = a2 + b2 .

2
(d) z = a(x + log y) − x2 − b.
√ √
(e) z = 12 [ x + a + y − a] + b.

(f) (x − a)2 + (y − b)2 = z 2 cot2 α, where α known constant.

Q2. Obtain partial differential equations by eleminating arbitrary functions:

(a) z = yf (x) + xg(y).

(b) z = xy + f (x2 + y 2 ).

z
(c) xy + yz + zx = f x+y .

(d) f (x2 + y 2 + z 2 , z 2 − 2xy) = 0.

Q3. If u = f (x2 + y) + F (x2 − y) then, show that

∂ 2 u 1 ∂u 2
2∂ u
− − 4x = 0.
∂x2 x ∂x ∂y 2

Q4. Find the differential equation of all planes which are at constant distance k from the origin.

Q5. Solve the following partial differential equations:

∂2z ∂z
(a) ∂x2
+ z = 0 given that when x = 0, z = ey , and ∂x
= 1.
∂2z
(b) ∂y 2
= sin(xy).

∂2u
(c) ∂x∂t
= e−t cos x.
Q6. Solve the Lagrange’s linear equations:
y2 z
(a) x
p + xzq = y 2 .

(b) x2 (y − z)p + y 2 (z − p)q = z 2 (x − y).

(c) x2 p + y 2 q = (x + y)z.

(d) y 2 p − xyq = x(z − 2y).

(e) (y − z)p + (x − y)q = z − x.

(f) p − q = log(x + y).

(g) px(z − 2y 2 ) = (z − qy)(z − y 2 − 2x3 ).

Q7. Solve the following equations by Charpit’s method:

(a) 2z + p2 + qy + 2y 2 = 0.

(b) 2(z + xp + yp) = yp2 .

(c) 2zx − px2 − 2pxy + pq = 0.

(d) 1 + p2 = qz.

(e) p(q 2 + 1) + (b − z)q = 0.
