To ask for time, you can use any of the following questions
and they all mean “What time is it?”
Telling Time
To tell time after the half hour, it is more common to say the
remaining minutes before the approaching hour and to use the
expression “para as” before the coming hour.
Example:
São vinte para as seis. -> It’s twenty to six.
São cinco para as sete. -> It’s five to seven.
Example:
O jogo começa às 7:00 da manhã. -> The game stars at 7:00 in
the morning.
To state that an event will begin and end at a certain time, you
use the expression “das (horas) (horas)” or “das (horas) até as
(horas)”.
11:5o a.m. -> São dez para as doze. -> It’s ten to twelve.
2:15 a.m. -> São dois e quinze. -> It’s quarter pass two.
7:10 a.m. -> sete seis. -> It’s ten past seven.
1:25 p.m. -> Um venti e cinco da tarde. -> It’s one twenty five
pm.
at 8 (sharp) -> Em oito. -> It’s 8 o’clock.
9:30 p.m. -> São nove e meia. -> It’s nine and a half.
For example:
São quinze e vinte e dois. -> It’s three twenty-two PM.
São dezenove e quinze. -> It’s seven fifteen PM.
