ABSTRACT
In India's four metropolitan cities, Calcutta (Kolkata), Bombay, Delhi and Madras the urban transport is heading towards a disaster because most of the cities are ancient and unplanned, The existing road space being much lower than what should be available and the relentless population pressure these cities are subjected to since independence & there is no space available on the ground for making additional roads and rail corridors. Hence there is a need for grade separated guided transport system, known as Mass Rapid Transit System. Such METRO systems are already operating in number of cities world and in a restricted stretch in Calcutta (Kolkata) since October24, 1984. Kolkata's nightmare is the cities woefully inadequate and insufficient transportation system. A rapid transit system consisting of 17 Kms long underground metro system was recommended in 1974. The system carries 1.8 million passengers with trains of 8-car formation at 2 minutes interval. The time for travel from Dum Dum to Tollvgunge is 33 minutes (Distance 16.43 Kms). Surface route can take upto 2 hrs or more during peak traffic hours.). The first stage of Calcutta(Kolkata) Metro from Dum Dum to Tollygunge - 17.5 Km long with 17 stations, provides many opportunities like many cities of the world where metro system resulted significant physical and economic development. The urban structure of Calcutta (Kolkata) Metropolitan District developed in a linier fashion on both sides of river Hooghly. The Metropolitan Transport Project (Railways) in their report to Calcutta Mass Transport Study proposed a rapid transmit system to solve acute Transportation problems for the city. The total system consists of two lines, North-South and cross river East-West to be built in three stages. Usually, the Tubular Railway System formally called METRO railway takes a primarily long route with a selected number of intermediate stations. After the service is commissioned, used by commuters increases the typical rapidity makes time management very effective and nearby area gets densely populated. So, the conglomeration of population makes, the metropolitan area extended to both terminal end and instead of coming to Metro Station by other means citizen claims (infact demands) another/more metro station to join its ends. Thereby the system expands. The Planning and Management was entrusted to Metropolitan Transport Project (Railways) and Calcutta Metropolitan Planning Organisation under the State Town and Country Planning Department emphasized the urban renewal and reconstruction of Calcutta Central City. Initially in Calcutta there is provision of tubuler system from Dum Dum to Tollygunge further its being expanded/extended from Tollygunge to Garia. Few more projects are coming up which are. i) ii) iii) DUM Dum Tollygunge with extension uo to Garia (N S line) East West line between Salt Lake to Ramrajatala. 2nd N-S line (Baranagar to Thakurpukar)

Due to rapid change in life style of Metropolitan City it is most appropriate time to expand the system of transport in various ways and means which will be cost effective and time saving so that overall economic growth and development can be possible. Moreover, a system to be adopted to commensurate the need and which could result in overall benefit.
