Stage 8 Chemistry: Atomic Structure

Lesson Plan

Lesson Objectives:
1. Identify the three subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons.
2. Understand the structure of an atom and the arrangement of subatomic particles.
3. Define atomic number and mass number.
4. Calculate the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in an atom.

Lesson Structure:
1. Introduction (10 min) - Show a simple atomic model, ask students what they know.
2. Explanation (20 min) - Explain protons, neutrons, electrons, atomic number, and mass number.
3. Activity & Worksheet (20 min) - Students practice calculating atomic structure.
4. Recap & Assessment (10 min) - Review answers and discuss key points.

Worksheet: Atomic Structure

Section A: Multiple Choice

1. What is the charge of a proton?

a) Positive
b) Negative
c) Neutral
d) No charge

2. Where are electrons found in an atom?

a) In the nucleus
b) In electron shells
c) Mixed with protons
d) In the neutron cloud

Section B: Calculations

1. An atom has an atomic number of 11 and a mass number of 23. Calculate the number of
protons, neutrons, and electrons.
2. A neutral atom has 17 protons and 18 neutrons. What is its atomic number and mass
number?

Section C: True or False

1. Neutrons have no charge. (True / False)

2. Electrons are heavier than protons. (True / False)
3. Atomic number is the number of neutrons in an atom. (True / False)

Model Answers

Section A: Multiple Choice

1. a) Positive
2. b) In electron shells

Section B: Calculations

1. Atomic number = 11 (protons = 11, electrons = 11, neutrons = 23 - 11 = 12)

2. Atomic number = 17, Mass number = 17 + 18 = 35

Section C: True or False

1. True - Neutrons have no charge.

2. False - Electrons are much lighter than protons.
3. False - Atomic number is the number of protons in an atom.
