There seems to be more demand for ESL services and less money for books! Its not easy to be an ESL teacher without photocopying books. ESL Resources recognizes this and provides ESL teachers with a relatively cheap source of legally reproducible books. For $25 - $50 purchasing teachers get an ESL book with photocopy permission. This is often less than 50 cents per reproducible page. Each book represents hundreds if not thousands of hours of preparation time. Teachers, how much is your time worth? Canadian Resources has the books - now keep us in business by purchasing our books. Photocopies are not for resale.
If you need photocopy permission for more than one teacher in your school, it can be arranged for a small additional fee. Please contact me at thane@eslresources.com for further information.
FAQ
Q: Can I make a copy for a teacher so she can photocopy from the photocopy for her students? A: Photocopying from a photocopy of this book is known as a pirate copy and is illegal. Isnt it better just to purchase the book with photocopy permission for less than $50? Q: Can I borrow this book from a resource centre or library, then photocopy it? A: No, that would be copyright violation. You only get a photocopy license if you purchase the book or your school has purchased site photocopy permission. English by Heart
English by Heart consists of 12 short stories, accompanying exercises, a teachers guide, appendix, flashcards and an audio CD. It was developed for the beginner adult second language learner with literacy needs. I have included a detailed five-day lesson plan for each of the 12 stories. Story units are used because stories are meaning makers, that is, they create word pictures which touch an emotional cord of meaning for the listener or reader. The stories are about the everyday lives of three young adults living, studying and working in Canada. The material content involves the emotions, the heart, and the opportunity to memorize chunks of language by heart. The material also provides opportunity for teaching settlement information to new Canadians. This material is compatible with the Canadian Language Benchmarks. It is suitable for literate non-Roman alphabet ESL learners and semi-literate Roman alphabet learners. The material is also suitable for beginner students who do not have literacy needs. It is not appropriate for Foundations students. (See Canadian Language Benchmarks 2000: ESL for Literacy Learners, or visit www.language.ca) Sue Martin

Project a transparency of the picture of Cam, p. 1, on the overhead. Talk about the picture in appropriate level language. (Is this a man or a woman? Is she young or old? What country is she from?) Play the CD version of story (2 or 3 times). Ask questions about the story using p. 4 as a guide. Ask questions in the third person expecting short answers only. Hand out copies of p. 1. Play the CD again 2 or 3 times. Students listen and follow along on their page. Read the story aloud with the students. Listen to each student read the story. (This is only possible in a very small class or with the help of volunteers.) Project a transparency of the story on the overhead. Students watch while you identify and number the sentences. (This introduces non-literate students to the meaning of sentence.)
