    Lighting for your bathrooms


    Your bathroom is an area that needs a flexible lighting scheme. The space should feel bright and fresh in the mornings and restful and rejuvenating in the evenings. The lighting should also let you perform tasks requiring more attention, like shaving or make-up application, easily. For this you need to have a good combination of indirect general lighting and shadow-free task lighting around areas like your mirror.

    Recommendations

    Area 01Bathtub area Philips does not recommend the use of any lighting fixtures in these areas. Area 2Ceiling and outside shower area General lighting from luminaries installed on the ceiling can provide the illumination needed here. Safety requirement: This area stretches to 0.6m outside the bath/shower and 2.25m above the floor. Since there is a risk of water accidentally splashing on the fitting, an IP rating of at least IPX4 is required.

    Area 3Grooming area near the mirror and wash basin You need to have bright and shadow free light here. For shaving or make-up application you can have lights on both sides of the mirror as this gives a bright, even light. Generally the sole use of top mounted are not advisable as they cast deep shadows on the face. Your lighting requirement will depend on the colour and texture of the bathroom tiles. Safety requirement: This area stretches beyond zone 2. As long as there is no chance of the fixture being splashed with water or steam, an IPX1 rating is sufficient. A higher IP rating can always be used to ensure added security.

    How much light do you need in your bathroom?


    Your bathroom needs a combination of general lighting and local task lighting, according to the different activities in each area. Different areas of your bathroom also have varying safety levels that are specified by the moisture exposure in that particular area. By following the correct area specific bathroom lighting you can perform your tasks comfortably and safely. Task lighting: This kind of lighting needs be bright enough to let you shave or to apply your make-up effortlessly. Use this kind of light around areas like mirrors and dressing areas. General Lighting: General lighting will provide the basic illumination you need in your bathroom. Use this kind of light to create a suitable ambience in your bathroom.

    Safety standards
    The Philips Aquafit collection comes with an IP (Ingress Protection) classification that indicates the degree of resistance to water and moisture. A diagram on the packaging tells you the fixtures IP classification and suitability to the bathroom zone in question. Philips follows the strictest safety standards to ensure you have the safest possible installation. However, you should keep in mind that your local specifications may differ from those followed by Philips and in case of any doubt you should consult a qualified electrician or contact your retail outlet.
