The honeybee was designated the state insect of Mississippi on 1980. Bee pollination is critical to plant and human survival-beeswax and honey are just surplus gifts from this tiny wonderful of nature. The plant world expends a lot of energy attracting bees and other insects with brilliantly colored flowers and sweet nectar (nectar is produced solely to attract pollinating insects). The honeybee is recognized as an official state symbol states, primarily because honeybees play such as an important role in agriculture.

Chinese chestnut trees grow profusely in MS gardens chinquapins trees and Halls Hardy Almond trees grow best in North Mississippi. Shagbark hickory trees are native nut trees and the Shagbark hickory nut, Carya ovato is a valuable food for wildlife deer and wildlife game birds. The hickory wood is used as a smoking agent for grilling meats outdoors.

The Jackson Zoo is located Jackson, Mississippi. The Jackson Zoo has attracted people from across the state and beyond for more than 90 years. The Zoo boasts an animal collection representing over 120 species and nearly 800 individual animals that provide glimpses of native wildlife from around the world. The Jackson Zoo is situated within the historic 110-acre (0.45km2) Livingston Park and welcomes approximately 200,000 visitors annually from Mississippi and surrounding states. 35,000 school children make their way to the zoo throughout the school year. Guests can also enjoy fare from the Elephant House Caf, purchase keepsake merchandise from the Jackson Zoo Trading Company. The Jackson Zoo is the second largest zoo in the state and is the only zoo accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in the state.
