Module 17:SOCIO-EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE PRESCHOOLER

ANALYSIS

Answer the following questions:

1. Were the children playing on their own or alone even when they were with others?

Answer:The two children playing with each other. They enjoy a game that they choose
to play.

2. Were there some children playing together with agreed upon Rules and roles ?
describe

Answer: children played together with agreed-upon rules and roles. The two children's
hands were close in the picture below, indicating that they were following agreed-upon
rules. I observed that they are playing Bato-Bato Pik, so clearly the rules and roles are
both agreed upon by the children.

[Link] you observed conflicts between or among children, how were they resolved? Did an
adult intervene? Or did they manage to resolve it by themselves?

Answer:If I observed conflicts between the children, they resolved them by themselves.
As I observed in that picture, the kid that wears a jacket can handle the conflict with the
kid who wears a shirt. The kids both agreed on their rules, so one of them will start
explaining the game's [Link] will be able to resolve it because they are mature
enough to handle the conflict

4. Were the children polite? What polite words (Thank you, sorry, etc.) or gestures did
you observe?

Answer:As I observed, the two children were polite to each other. They most likely said
"sorry," especially if they disagreed with the outcome of the game they were playing.I
don’t see any gesture but their faces telling each other, "I’m sorry."

SYNAPSE STRENGTHENERS

1. Research on the following theories on gender development:

A. Biological approach

suggests there is no distinction between sex & gender, thus biological sex creates
gendered behavior. Gender is determined by two biological factors: hormones and
chromosomes. -The approach emphasizes the gender role differences are the result of
biological processes. In human beings there are 23 pairs of chromosomes. 23rd pair of
chromosome is called sex chromosome in females it is XX and in males it is XY.
According to biological theory differences in chromosomes (X/Y) and
hormones(testosterone/estrogen) determine the behavioral differences between boys
and girls. Males are more aggressive in almost all cultures and male child has higher
mortality rate than female child. Biological view explains this phenomenon with the
findings that Androgen hormones are linked to disruptive and aggressive behaviors in
males. Androgens hormones are related to male characteristics; most important
androgen is testosterone.

B. Psychoanalytic approach

-suggests that gender development takes place during the third stage of his
psychosexual theory of personality development. He called this the phallic stage, which
occurs between three and six years old. During this stage, the child’s libido is focused
on his or her genitals. Development of gender in psychoanalytic theory is different for
boys and for girls: boys experience the Oedipus complex and identify with their father
and take on a male gender role; girls experience the Electra complex (see Jung) and
identify with their mother and take on a female gender role.

C. Cognitive development theory

Gender identity is postulated as the basic organizer and regulator of children's gender
learning. Children develop the stereotypic conceptions of gender from what they see
and hear around them. -the understanding of gender as the outcome of having passed
through three stages of cognitive maturation that pertain specifically to gender. -
Focuses on how children socialize once they understand themselves as belonging
either to the category of male or female

D. Gender schema theory

is a process where the schemas are active, facilitating a relationship between the child’s
thoughts, behaviour, and in turn shaping the development of their gender and attitudes
towards the self - is a cognitively based theory that uses an information processing
approach to explain how gender development occurs. The basis of this model is the
cognitive representation called a schema. A schema is an organizing structure that
helps simplify and categorize new information.

-A sserted that children learn about male and female roles from the culture in which they
live. According to the theory, children adjust their behavior to align with the gender
norms of their culture from the earliest stages of social development

E. Social cognitive theory

acknowledgestheinfluentialroleofevolutionaryfactorsinhuman adaptationandchange, but

rejects one-sided evolutionism in which social behavior is the product of evolved
biology, but social and [Link] cognitive theory, developed by Albert
Bandura, emphasizes learning through observation, the role of cognitive processes, and
the interplay between personal factors and the social environment. It highlights self-
efficacy, vicarious reinforcement, and self-regulation as key concepts in understanding
behavior. The theory recognizes the influence of the social and physical environment on
individuals' beliefs, attitudes, and actions.

2. Read on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) issues. One controversial
storybook for children is "Tango story about two male penguins starting : Makes Three"
family. Research on this and write an essay about your own views on introducing LGBT
to preschoolers.

I advise parents that the age of 5 is a wonderful time to lay a foundation for what
homosexuality is and to instill in your young child a sense of tolerance and acceptance
for being lesbian or gay. "You know, just like a man and a woman can love each other
so can a man and a man or a woman and a woman. A man that loves and is attracted
to another man is called a gay man. A woman that loves and is attracted to another
woman is called a lesbian woman. Gay men and lesbian women are also called
homosexuals. It is very important that we respect people who are gay and lesbian".
Your 5 year old will happily say, "Oh, okay" and be done with it. While this may not
sound like much of a beginning, it is nevertheless a beautiful foundation for additional
discussion and teaching as time goes along. Soon thereafter, you can begin to scaffold
additional information as needed, always keeping a focus on building acceptance and
tolerance

REFLECTION

From this module on the Socio-Emotional Develepent of Preschoolers, I realized

that...Explain why?....

From this module on the socio-emotional development of preschoolers, I realized that

preschool-age children undergo significant growth in their emotional and social
capabilities. They develop important skills such as emotional awareness, social
interaction, and self-identity. Positive relationships, play, and emotional support play
crucial roles in their development. Additionally, individual differences are recognized,
highlighting the need for tailored support. Overall, this module has emphasized the
importance of nurturing emotional well-being, fostering positive relationships, and
supporting social skill development during this critical period of a child's growth.
