Size: Medium women's sock Yarn: Fingering weight sock yarn approximately 450 yds Needles: US size 1 or 2 dpns set of 5 is best but set of 4 will work Gauge: 7.5-8 st/inch Cuff Cast on 64 stitches, 16 stitches on each of four needles or, if you have only 4 needles, 16 stitches on the first needle, 32 stitches on the next needle, and 16 stitches on the last needle. Join the round being careful to not twist the stitches. You can knit in k2p2 ribbing for 2" and switch to stockinette for a total of 7" or knit in k2p2 rib for a 7". Heel Flap Leaving half the stitches unworked start knitting the heel as follows: (This forms a garter stitch edge on the heel flap) Row 1: Sl 1 pwise, knit to end of row Row 2: Sl 1 pwise, k 2, purl to last 3 stitches, k 2, p1 Repeat those two rows until flap measures 2 to 2.5" ending with row 1. Turn Heel Row 1: Sl 1 pwise, purl 17,(note: this is 2 stitches past the middle), p2tog, p1, turn Row 2: Sl 1 pwise, k5, k2tog, k1, turn Row 3: Sl 1 pwise, purl to one stitch before gap, p2tog, p1, turn Row 4: Sl 1 pwise, knit to one stitch before gap, k2tog, k1, turn Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all heel stitches have been worked. Gusset Knit half of the heel stitches (needle 4); center of sock is now the middle of the heel. Using another needle knit the remaining heel stitches (needle 1); pick up & knit one stitch for every slip stitch along the side of the heel flap. Knit instep stitches (Top of foot, needles 2 & 3); pick up & knit the same number of stitches as before along remaining slipped stitch edge. Knit one round plain. Needle 1 is the last half of the heel stitches. Needles 2 & 3 are the instep stitches. Needle 4 is the first half of the heel stitches. Or if using only 4 needles needle 1 is the first half of the heel stitches, needle 2 is the top of the foot, and needle 3 is the last half of the heel stitches. Next Round: knit to last 3 stitches on needle 1, k2tog, k1. Knit across needles 2 & 3. Needle 4: work k1, ssk. Knit to end of needle 4. Knit one round plain. Alternate a decrease round with a regular round until there are 16 stitches on needles 1 & 4. Work in st st until sock foot is 1.5 to 2" shorter than the foot of the intended recipient. Toe Knit to the last 3 stitches on needle 1, k2tog, k1. On needle 2 k 1, ssk, knit to end of needle. Needle 3 knit to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1. On needle 4 k 1, ssk, knit to end of needle. Knit one round plain. Alternate one decrease round with one plain round until there are 8 stitches on each needle then work decrease rounds only until there are 4 stitches on each needle. Cut yarn leaving a very long tail for grafting. Graft or thread yarn through remaining stitches and pull tight. Weave in yarn ends and knit a matching sock.
