    Animal Farm

    Major Characters
     Old Major – Prize-winning boar who leads the
    Rebellion to create a socialist utopia.
     Napoleon – After the Rebellion, becomes the self-
    declared leader and rules as an evil dictator, by
    example of Joseph Stalin.
     Snowball – Conflicts with Napoleon over control of
    the Animal Farm after the Rebellion.
     Boxer – A bull who is an example of the hard,
    dedicated workers in the Soviet Union who just
    follow orders.
    Plot Conflicts

     “Man” vs. “Man” or “Man” vs. “Society”


     The farm animals vs. Mr. Jones
     Snowball vs. Napoleon

     Animal Farm vs. the neighboring humans


    Plot Summary

    Farm animals revolt against their human


    masters. After the ‘Rebellion,’ they think it is the
    start of a better life. They dream of a world
    where all animals are equal and all property is
    shared. But soon the pigs take control and one
    of them, Napoleon, becomes the leader of all
    the animals. One by one the principles of the
    revolution are abandoned acts as their ‘Stalin.’
    The farm eventually reaches a point where the
    animals have even less freedom than before.
    Themes
    • The main theme of Animal Farm is the Socialist ideas of
    the Soviet Union
    • Napoleon becomes the self-declared leader of the
    Animal Farm and begins to introduce socialist ideas.
    • The pigs start to become the ‘ruling class’ just like in
    Soviet Society with the ruling class
    • Leaders started changing rules and using them for
    their own gain, corrupting the system
    • Orwell also uses the abuse of power in Socialist
    Society
