should have its own architectural character.

Muzharul Islam is considered as the "Grand Master" of regional modernism in South Asia. He is the only pioneer of Modernism in Bangladesh.

If we want to understand about the evolution of architectural style in architect Muzharul Islams work we should understand first about the

time frame where he belonged. And a comparison between his contemporary architects works also help us to find out the changes what has
been done in his work in terms of time.

Schooling

In 1950 he went America and studied at the University of Oregon in Architecture.

In 1956 he got a scholarship to study tropical architecture in London at the AA school of architecture.

Then in 1960 he went to Yale on his own to do post-graduation under Paul Rudolph. At Yale Stanley Tigerman was one of his classmates, and there he came in touch of Louis I Kahn.
He returned from London in 1961.

04. Career
Muzharul Islam began his career after the partition of India in 1947 by joining the Government service as assistant engineers. After some days he was sent to Chittagong then to Noakhali where he was the SDO (sub divisional officer). After returning from America, in 1952 he joined under chief architect Mc Connell. He informed Muzharul Islam of some long pending government work. Ha worked alone for six months on the art college and the library without letting anyone to intervene. He involved the drafting section only after the design was done. Muzharul Islam began his Architectural career by designing two buildings in the Shahbag area in 1955 - Dhaka University Library and Institute of Arts and Crafts (Art Institute Dhaka). The government decided to build a capital complex at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka. Muzharul Islam was given to design Jatiyo Sangsad Bhaban (National Assembly Building of Bangladesh). But, he brought his teacher Louis Kahn into the project to do a significant work for future generation.

Islam worked closely with him from 1965 to Kahn's death in 1973. His major works include Jahangirnagar University, Chittagong University, Central Public Library, Charukala Institute, the Azimpur Estate, Rangmati township, and a number of Polytechnic Institutes. Islam designed the master plan of Dhaka City. He also designed the logo for the government of Bangladesh.

Early work
1953-55: Fine Arts institute, Dhaka University, Bangladesh

Lets see what the architect told about his project in one of his interview, I've designed the building, the bottom floor was open for public use they can easily come from outside in this area. Intensive relationship with nature. But nowadays architecture can be seen in the bottom floor of the car for parking.

An important feature for fine arts institute was its relationship with landscape. According Bangladeshi context it is a work of intersperse structure, not a compact structure. Here he used solid wall and own character of the materials. He works here with purity which we cant see in so many architects work in that time.

Characteristics of Fine Arts institute

1.Simplicity and clarity of forms and elimination of "unnecessary detail" 2.Visual expression of structure 3.The pilotis elevating the mass off the ground 4.The true nature or natural appearance 5.A visual emphasis on horizontal and vertical lines.

Le corbusiers five points of architecture

During his career Le Corbusier developed a set of architectural principles that dictated his technique, called the five points of a New architecture which were most evident in his Villa savoye. These were Pilotis The replacement of supporting walls by a grid of reinforced concrete columns that bears the load of the structure is the basis of the new aesthetic. Roof gardens The flat roof can be utilized for a domestic purpose while also providing essential protection to the concrete roof. The free designing of the ground plan The absence of supporting walls means that the house is unrestrained in its internal usage. The free design of faade By separating the exterior of the building from its structural function the faade becomes free. The horizontal window The faade can be cut along its entire length to allow rooms to be lit equally. Architect Muzharul Islams early works were similar to Le corbusers architectural thoughts. His fine arts institute touches most of the le corbusiers five points of architecture. Here the architect tried to practice how modern architecture changes its character in contact with contextual issues. How architecture behaves when the context and climate imported into a design, rather being focused into his early works.

Middle work
1967-70: Jahangir Nagar University

Characteristics of Jahangir Nagar University

strong composition of angular lines and tilted squares a wonderful display of man-made order in a continuous harmony with the site undisrupted water body and the existing trees of this sprawling site by his geometric layout clustered red brick masses, wonderful brick details, interplay with the lash green foliages, wonderful internal courts all create a complementary dialogue of built form and nature.

Later work

1978: Joypurhat Limestone and cement Project

The buildings Standing side by side . This represent an aura of monumentality.

Thoughts of the architectural concepts, in accordance with the climate, surrounding environment and the mentality of the users.

He created a double layer exterior to all the buildings to prevent the heat and radiation from entering the interior directly.
The walls and the form together give a sculptural quality to the masses. A perfect coherence between the landscape and the building masses.

Muzharul Islam was a modern rationalist architect. He worked with the abstraction of modernism. His work was somewhat influenced by architect Louis I kahn. As we see after being contacted with Louis I kahn he became more concerned about geometry. Which reflected in his later works was more geometric rather than his early works. In his later works we can see lifted box, perforation etc. He designed strong and enclosed space. He tried to improve the surrounding with the best available knowledge of an architect. Muzharul Islam has given a very strong foundation and ideology to the Nation to build upon it. It is absolutely unavoidable and would be very nave to ignore such a prominent figure like him
