    What is phonetics and phonology? According to the

    Merriam-Webster dictionary, phonetics is the system of speech sounds of a language and phonology is the science of speech sounds.
    Phonetics is the study of sound in speech while phonology is

    the study of sound patterns to create meaning.


    Phonetics focuses on how speech is physically created and

    received, including study of the human vocal and auditory tracts, acoustics, and neurology. Phonology relies on phonetic information for its practice, but focuses on how patterns in both speech and non-verbal communication create meaning, and how such patterns are interpreted.

    As The Foundation For Teaching Students To Read.


    Nowadays, phonetics is being taught even in primary school.

    The mastery on this topic will helps teacher to increase the student's literacy in reading. For example, by practicing the sounding of each phonemes accurately, students acquire better reading skill.

    To Deliver Accurate Pronunciation During English Teaching.


    As an English teacher, pronunciation holds the key towards

    delivering meaningful utterances to listeners. The correct pronunciation will avoid the confusion from the listener. For example, the word 'wind' should be pronounced accurately as it carries different meaning as a verb and as a noun.

    Helps Pronouncing English Words Correctly


    By pronouncing English words correctly, it will boost up

    students confidence in the teacher.


    For example, if the students have a good command in English

    and the teacher pronounces one of the English words incorrectly, the students might be doubt and confused with the teaching. He or she might be discouraged in learning with the teacher. In worst, the students might end up by making fun of the teacher because of his or her mistakes.

    To Help All Students Grasp The Correct Pronunciation Of English Words.


    This is by the means of the International Phonetic Alphabet

    (IPA). IPA is a system of phonetic notation composed of symbols and letters. Its used to create a standardized and accurate method of representing the sounds of the English language. Teachers need to keep in mind not to neglect the correct written spelling of words and only giving regard to the IPA in speech and pronunciation. When the teachers teaches the students using he IPA system, it will certainly help the students better grasp the idea of the different sounds.

    Help Teacher To Understand The Students' Problems Much Better.

    Linthe from Cambridge University Press: "if somebody came to you and asked for advice because they were getting headaches, or they were getting persistent pains in their knees or something, you could think of some homely advice that you would give them and it might well result in them improving.

    Phonetics and phonology is an important aspect of teaching

    in the English language, but is rarely taught at schools or universities. For a teacher to be effective, they need to view teaching pronunciation as an essential part of the course. Skilled pronunciation teaching can do much good.
    Teachers can use different activities to help students grasp

    the idea of phonetics and accurate pronunciation such as peer dictation, teachers own mouth, visuals, phonemes, and tongue twisters.

    Teachers should takes the time to stress the importance of

    phonetics and phonology as it will help students to better communicate in the English language, enabling them to more fully express and understand the feeling and implications behind the words of the English language.
