Buoyancy and Stability
Whenever a body is immersed wholly or partially in a fluid, it is buoyed up (i.e., lifted up) by a force to the weight of fluids displaced by a body.

BUOYANCY
The buoyant force acts vertically upward through the centroid of the displaced volume and can be defined mathematically by Archimedes principle as follows;
Fb = f gVd
Where; Fb = f = g = Vd = Buoyant force Density of the fluid gravity Displaced volume of the fluid
CENTRE OF BUOYANCY
We
see that whenever a body is placed over a liquid, either it sinks down or floats on the liquid. If we analyse the phenomenon of floatation, we find that the body, placed over a liquid, is subjected to the following two forces;
A uniform body 3 m long, 2 m wide and 1 m deep floats in water. If the depth of immersion is 0.6 m, what is the weight of the body?
(35.3 kN)
A block of wood 4 m long, 2 m wide and 1 m deep is floating horizontally in water. If the density of the wood be 6.87 kN/m3, find the volume of the water displaced and position of the centre of buoyancy.
(5.6 m3, 0.35 m)
METACENTRE
Whenever a body, floating in a liquid, is given a small angular displacement, it starts oscillating about some point. This point, about which the body start oscillating, is called metacentre In other words, the metacentre may also be defined as the inter section of the line passing through the original centre of buoyancy (B) and centre gravity (G) of the body, and the vertical line though the new centre of buoyancy (B1).
