Laminated object manufacturing (LOM) is a rapid prototyping system that builds three-dimensional objects by successively gluing and cutting sheets of adhesive-coated materials like paper, plastic, or metal. The process involves a feeder that advances sheets over the build platform where a heated roller bonds each new sheet to the previous layers before a laser cuts the shape for that layer. This process repeats layer by layer to build the final part.

Laminated object manufacturing (LOM) is a rapid prototyping system.
It is developed by Helisys Inc.
In it, layers of adhesive-coated paper, plastic, or metal laminates are successively glued together and cut to shape with a knife or laser cutter. Objects printed with this technique be additionally modified by machining or drilling after printing. Typical layer resolution for this process is defined by the material feedstock and usually ranges in thickness from one to a few sheets of copy paper.
A feeder/collector mechanism advances the sheet over the build platform. A heated roller applies pressure to bond the paper to the base. A focused laser cuts the outline of the first layer into the paper and remove the waste material. After the first layer is cut, the platform lowers out of the way and fresh material is advanced. The platform rises to slightly below the previous height, the roller bonds the second layer to the first, and the laser cuts the second layer. This process is repeated as needed to build the part.
A veriety of organic and inorganic material like paper , plastic , ceramic can be used in the LOM process. It allowes user to meet various requirements such as price range environmental concerns , chemical and mechanical properties , color and appearance etc. Relatively large parts may be made, because no chemical reaction is necessary. The process is much faster than competitive techniques. Dimensional accuracy is good so no milling step is necessary. We can get a finer surface due to the availability of sheets as thin as 0.0005 inch. No support structure is needed. It is eco-friendly.
Difficulty in producing hollow parts. Traditional manufacturing is usually much faster when mass producing identical parts. Fire hazard is occasionally happened when the working chamber becomes too hot. The built parts absorb moisture quickly. The process is restricted to build complex parts. It is very difficult to remove the waste materials from inside.
