WHAT ARE PROCESSORS ?

A processor is the logic circuitry that responds to and processes the
basicinstructions that drive a computer.
The term processor has generally replaced the term central processing unit
(CPU). The processor in a personal computer or embedded in small
devices is often called a microprocessor.
There are multiple companies that manufacture processors but we will
discuss only INTEL Processors.

INTEL PENTIUM III

PRODUCED : From early 1999.
CPU Clock rate ranges from 400MHz to 1.4GHz.
Front-Side-Bus speed ranges from 100MHz to 133MHz.
9.5 Million transistors are used in this technology.
Predecessor : Pentium II.
Successor : Pentium 4.
It executed Internet Streaming SIMD extensions, which utilized multiple low
power-states to conserve power during idle times.

INTEL PENTIUM IV
PRODUCED : In 2000.
CPU Clock rate ranges from 1.5GHz to 3.8GHz.
42 Million transistors are used in this technology.
Predecessor : Pentium III.
Successor : Pentium D.
It executed Streaming SIMD extensions 2, which provides 144 new
instructions to speed up video, multimedia, 3D imaging and encryption.

INTEL PENTIUM D
PRODUCED : In 2005.
CPU Clock rate ranges from 2.66GHz to 3.73GHz.
291 Million transistors are used in this technology.
Predecessor : Pentium IV.
Successor : Core 2 Duo.
It is the first desktop dual core designed processor with two complete
processor cores, that can run at same speed, in one physical package. It
gives you the flexibility to handle even multiple users simultaneously.

INTEL CORE 2 DUO

PRODUCED : In 2006.
CPU Clock rate ranges from 1.8GHz to 3.3GHz.
291 Million transistors are used in this technology.
Predecessor : Pentium D.
Successor : Core 2 Quad.
It is more energy efficient, with shorter idle times and imoroved data
transfer rate.

INTEL CORE 2 QUAD

PRODUCED : In 2007.
CPU initial Clock rate is 2.66GHz.
582 Million transistors are used in this technology.
Predecessor : Core 2 Duo.
Successor : Core i3.
It is more energy efficient, with shorter idle times and improved data
transfer rate.

INTEL CORE I3
PRODUCED : In 2010.
CPU Clock rate ranges from 1.7GHz to 3.9GHz.
382 Million transistors are used in the First Generation core i3 processor.
Predecessor : Core 2 Quad.
Successor : Core i5.
Core i3 processors have 4 threads that enables multi-threading and multitasking, cache of core i3 processor is up to 4MB and are only having 2cores.

INTEL CORE I5
PRODUCED : In 2008.
CPU Clock rate ranges from 1.9GHz to 3.6GHz.
Predecessor : Core i3.
Successor : Core i7.
Core i5 processors support turbo boost technology which boosts up the
working speed of computational system, cache of core i5 processors is up
to 8MB and have 2 to 4-cores.

INTEL CORE I7
PRODUCED : In 2009.
Maximum CPU Clock rate of core i7 is 3.2GHz.
Predecessor : Core i3.
Core i7 processors are mostly having 4 to 8-cores but some mobile
processors also have 2-cores.
The cache memory of core i7 is upto 12MB.

ADVANTAGES OF
CORE I5 OVER CORE
I3
1. I5 is more energy efficient than i3 and produces less heat as compared to
i3.
2. It seems to be better at a particular job than core i3 processor.
3. Cache memory of i5 is greater than i3.
4. Core i5 provides turbo boost mode.

ADVANTAGES OF
CORE I7 OVER CORE
I5
1. This is for the users who require power, it is more powerful than core i5.
2. Cache memory of i7 is greater than i5.
3. It is more faster and energy efficient than i5.
