What is Moby-Dick?
Moby Dick1 is a novel by American author Herman Melville published in 1851. It
tells the journey of the whaling ship Pequot, commanded by Captain Ahab, in the
obsessive and self-destructive pursuit of a great white whale (whale).
Besides the persecution and evolution of their characters, the theme of the novel is
eminently encyclopedic to include detailed and extensive descriptions of whaling in
the nineteenth century and many other details about the seafaring life of the time.
Perhaps for that reason the novel had no commercial success in its first publication,
although later has served to cement the author's reputation and place among the best
American writers.
The opening words of the narrator - "Call me Ishmael" in English, translated into
Spanish sometimes as "Call me Ishmael" sometimes as "you can call me Ishmael" - 2
has become one of the appointments more known literature in English.
