Week 2 (12/9/2016-16/9/2016)

DEBATE
Debates are essentially structured discussions. As a debater, your role is to

present an argument and to defend your argument well.

To do this, you must first know your motion (do research!)


Communication skills is key: present your case clearly and in detail

STANCE
Thesis statement to explain the purpose of the policy (motion) presented.
The stance will help the debaters, adjudicators (judges) and the audience

understand which side your team is on and the purpose of your argument

E.g.
Governments stance: This House will ban smoking because it brings more
bad than good.
Oppositions stance: This House will not ban smoking because it is the
individuals right to choose to smoke.

REBUTTAL
Rebuttals are counter arguments presented by one team against the

opposing teams ideas.

Rebuttals should be short in a speech (~2 mins or less)


It can consist of a new idea counter the other teams argument.

ARGUMENT
There are 3 aspects to an argument (point):
Idea: main points to help strengthen your argument or your stance.
Analysis: explanation or the reasons why your idea is relevant to the

motion of the debate.

Evidence: examples from reliable sources to support your case

A very good afternoon I bid to Mr/Madam Speaker, adjudicators, time keeper and

members of the floor.

TO DEFEND AN IDEA:
We stand strong as a support
We adhere to the fact
We believe it is important to make sense of the idea
It is rather viable
Some of the reasons for us to justify .

TO REBUT :
The idea presented is not valid.
It is unjustified to say..
There is no substantial in their presentation
We dont see any chain effect of the policy..
The explanation is not clear because..
