ADVANTAGE AND
DISADVANTAGE

1. Definition of Computer Based

Learning
What is Computer Based Learning?
Computer-based learning is a term that can be used to describe virtually
any kind of learning program using computers as a central staple. This
approach to learning takes advantage of the interactive elements of
computer software, along with the computers ability to present many
different kinds of media. There are several potential advantages of
computer-based learning programs, including the ability for people to learn
from their homes and study without the assistance of an instructor.
This type of learning has been used as a tool in the midst of a more
traditional classroom experience. It has also been used as a primary
education method, especially in many online education programs. The use
of computers for learning has generally increased with the advancement of
technology. The ability of computer hardware to process and present many
different media types has allowed for more complex computer
learning strategies.
The computer-based learning model can be used by a myriad of learning
programs across the world. It can also be combined with traditional teaching
methods to enhance the overall educational. Computer-based learning is
also known as computer-aided instruction.

2. Characteristics of Computer Based

Learning

Utilize the power of the computer (digital media and network

technology/computer network).
Utilizing multimedia technology, so that the learning
environment to be interesting, not boring and ultimately
motivate learners to learn independently.
Utilizing electronic technologies ; where educators and learners,
learners and fellow learners or educators and peer educators
can communicate with relative ease without being limited by
matters of protocol.
Using the media is independent (self learning materials)
stored on a computer so it can be accessed by educators and
learners anytime and anywhere if the person
concerned needs.
Utilizing Data Exchange (Information sharing)
which interactively can be viewed at anytime
on the computer.

3. Role of Computer Based in

Learning Activities
Computer based has many role or function in the learning activities,
there are:
. 1. Cognitive Objectives
Computers can teach the concepts of rules, principles, measures,
processes, and complex calculations. Computers also can explain
the concept by simply by merging visual and audio, animated.
Making it suitable for self-learning activities.
2. The purpose of Affective
When a program is designed appropriately to give a piece of clip
sound or video whose contents arouse feelings, learning attitude /
affective can be done using computer media.
3. Psychomotor Objectives
With this form of learning that is packaged in a very nice games
and simulations are used to create the conditions of the working
world. Some examples of programs, among others; aircraft landing
simulations, simulation of war in the most severe terrain and so on.

4. Advantage and Disadvantage of

Computer Based Learning
Computer Based Learning has many advantages:
a. Provide opportunities for students to solve problems
individually
b. Provide compelling presentations with animation
c. Provide learning content choices are many and varied
d. Capable of motivating students to learn
e. Capable of activating and stimulating methods of teaching
well
f. Promoting the development of students' understanding of
the material presented
g. Stimulate students to learn with passion, the material
presented easily understood by students.

h. Students had an experience that is concrete, increased

student retention
i. Give direct feedback
j. Can accommodate students who are slow because it can
create an effective learning climate with a much more
personal way.
k. Can stimulate students to do the exercise because of the
availability of animated graphics, color and music.
l. The handle is on the student so that the learning speed
can be adjusted to the level of ability.

In addition to the many advantages

possessed by this way of learning, computerbased learning also has some disadvantages:
a. Learners with low motivation or bad study habits
may fall behind
b. Without the routine structures of a traditional class,
students may get lost or confused about course
activities and deadlines
c. Students may feel isolated from the instructor and
classmates
d. Instructor may not always be available when
students are studying or need help
e. Slow Internet connections or older computers may
make accessing course materials frustrating

5. Example
Training and practice : In this computer-based learning
students are given questions or problems to be solved
and then the computer will give a response to the
answers given student.
Tutorial : This learning model provides a lesson plan that
is complexs contains learning materials, exercises and
feecback.
Simulations : This learning model presents a system of
learning by a process of imitation of the real thing in the
form of animation.
