forms can be traced to a variety of
factors like geography, history,
language and religion.

BHARATA NATYAM
Oldest dance form of India.
One of the most popular and widely
performed dance styles.
Has wide range of movements and
postures.
Lends itself well to experimental and
fusion choreography all over India.
Bharatanatyam is a
classical dance
form originated in
Tamil Nadu
KATHAK
KATHAK
Traces its origins to the nomadic
bards of ancient northern India.
Characterized by fast rhythmic
footwork.
Accompanied by instruments such as
tabla & pakhawaj
Numerous pirouettes at lightening
speeds & ending up in sculptural
poses.

in Uttar
Pradesh.
Believed to be
evolved from
Lord Krishna's
raas lilas
KATHAKALI
Kathakali
One of the oldest theatre forms in
the world.
Performances traditionally based on
themes from Hindu mythology.
A highly stylized classical Indian
dance-drama.

in Kerala
KUCHIPUDI

Performed as a dance drama.


Performance begins with some stage
rites, after which each of the
character introduces daru.
Accompanied by song which is
typically Carnatic music
The singer is accompanied by
mridangam,violin, flute & tambura.

MANIPURI
MANIPURI
A religious dance form & associated to
Vaishnav cult of Hinduism.
Dance style is multifaceted & ranges from
the softest feminine to the vigorous
masculine.
Dancers do not wear ankle bells to
highlight the beats tapped out by the feet,
in contrast with other Indian dance forms
The dancers' feet never strike the ground
hard.
It originates

Mohiniyattam
Mohiniyattam- dance of the enchantress.
Considered a very graceful dance meant
to be performed as a solo recital by
women.
Performer uses the eyes in a very coy yet
graceful manner.
Costume includes white sari embroidered
with bright golden brocade at the edges.

First originated as a court dance.
Traces its origin in 2nd century B.C.
Is distinguished from other classical Indian
dance forms by the importance it places
upon the tribhangi (literally: three parts
break), the independent movement of
head, chest and pelvis, and upon the basic
square stance known as chauka.
