This document provides information on materials, procedures, and safety measures for brickworks installation. It lists the necessary materials which include common clay bricks, cement, sand, water, damp proof course, tools, and reinforcement materials. The procedures describe site preparation, work execution, and on-site control measures. Safety measures include providing stiffeners, lintels, expanded metal, and ensuring proper alignment and consistency in brick laying. Dowel bars are to be installed with grout every fourth course for reinforcement.

Determine the M&E works prior to erecting of brickwall. Check the setting out of brickwall with the reference to the gridlines / columns. Locate the position of the stiffener and cast prior to erection of brickwall. Work Execution The brickwall shall be erected as described in approved construction drawings such as in English / Stretcher bond or otherwise stated. Prior of laying the brick, location of the brickwall shall be marked with reference to gridline given . The bricks used for laying shall be in good condition and free from fungus. Sand shall be clean and free from clay. The water for the mixing media shall be free from any inorganic content. The binding mortar of the brickwall shall be 1 part cement and 6 part sand by volume (1:6). Check the consistency of the mortar of being applied that shall be 10mm thick mortar being bedded on the brick . Ensure that laying of bricks are carried out in layers by using string to control the straightness and evenness of the brick laying activity. The horizontal and vertical alignment of brick wall shall be maintained, by using a plumb or survey equipment with the guidance of the floor marking throughout the brick wall construction. This procedure shall be followed with every course. For underground level and external wall, one layer of damp proof course shall be lay prior to bricklaying works commence. Contd Ensure dowel bar for brickwall to the reinforced concrete are protruded 350mm into the brick wall at every forth layer. To provide stiffeners, lintels and other wall reinforcement as specified the construction drawings. Lintels and stiffener shall be provided at openings designated for doors, windows or M&E opening. Details are as shown in the approved construction drawings. Started bars of stiffeners will be installed by using epoxy (approved material) with methodology as per recommended by manufacturer. Ensure that formworks of stiffener & lintels are checked for vertical alignment by suspend a plumb bob and spirit level. Ensure the opening for services and locations for doors and windows are correct. Brick shall be tapped firmly on the evenly spread mortar to ensure good bond between each brick to prevent any void area. Mortar joints for brickworks should be +/- 10mm thick. Ensuring all joints of brick are consistently and fully filled up with mortar with the usage of spatula. All adjustment of bricks final position must be made while the mortar is still soft and plastic. Adjusting the brick after the mortar has stiffened will break the mortar bond, causing cracks and allow water leakage. Adjustments to the bricks is done by tapping with the trowel handle, hammer or mallet, to bring the block level and aligned to the string line. Any brick adjustment made after the mortar has stiffened (even partially) must be removed and re-laid with fresh mortar. Provide expanded metal (exmet) at every forth course for all brick wall. The lapping shall be at 150mm or as specified. Stiffeners shall be made available according to the structural requirements specified in the General Notes / Typical Details with G25 concrete. Upon completion of works or other commencement of other trades, joint inspection with COW shall be held under the guideline of the Inspection Checklist prior to plastering works. STIFFENERS
Vertical R.C Stiffeners and horizontal lintel
beams as specified below shall be provided for all brickwall R6mm brickwall ties at every 4th course shall be provided from all R.C elements (including stiffeners) into the brickwalls. 115mm thick brickwall to provide 125 x 125 vertical stiffeners ( reinf: 4T12, links : R6-150 c/c) to all 115mm brickwalls at 4m c/c. Provide horizontal lintel beam at 3.3, height centres. 230mm thick brickwall to provide 200 x 200 vertical stiffeners ( reinf: 4T12, links : R6-150 c/c) to all 230mm brickwalls at 6m c/c. Provide horizontal lintel beam at 4m, height centres. For lintel beam supporting up to 3m high brickwall, provide as shown below Lintel Dowel Bar
