SUFFERING
1 PETER 1:6-9
1 Peter 1:6-9
In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if
necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so
that the tested genuineness of your faithmore
precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by
firemay be found to result in praise and glory and
honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Though you
have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not
now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy
that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining
the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your
souls. (ESV)
BRIEF HISTORY:
Peter writing to Christians throughout Asia Minor
(persecution from Rome).
They are treated differently because of their faith.
To encourage them and to give them/ rekindle their
hope.
In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if
necessary, you have been grieved by various trials - 1 peter
1:6
Sufferings/ Affliction (pathema)

pain; subjectively an emotion or influence: -
affection, affliction, motion, suffering.

A testing; by implication trustworthiness: -
trial, trying.
2 Corinthians 6:10
As sorrowful, yet always
rejoicing; as poor, yet making
many rich; as having nothing,
yet possessing everything.
To have hope (resulting to be
joyful) is not to deny the pain.
They can exist together.
Why is JESUS is
our hope in times
of suffering?
1. Jesus is the redeemer of
our soul (v.3-5) (Benefits of Salvation)
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused
us to be born again to a living hope through the
resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an
inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and
unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God's
power are being guarded through faith for a salvation
ready to be revealed in the last time.
a. JESUS gave us a new life
JESUS died a vicarious death and
set us free us from the shackles of
sin.
Vicarious serving instead of
someone else.
For the wages of sin is
death, but the free gift of
God is eternal life in
Christ Jesus our Lord. -
Romans 6:23
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which
you once walked, following the course of this world,
following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit
that is now at work in the sons of disobedienceamong
whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh,
carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and
were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of
mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the
great love with which he loved us, even when we were
dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with
Christby grace you have been savedand raised us
up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly
places in Christ Jesus, - Ephesians 2:1-6
JESUS restore our
relationship with GOD
through his death on the cross
and we can come to GOD
freely through CHRIST.
Jesus said to him, I am
the way, and the truth, and
the life. No one comes to
the Father except through
me. - John 14:6
b. In HIM we have
undefiled inheritance
The glory that you have given me I have
given to them, that they may be one even
as we are one, - John 17:22
The Spirit himself bears witness with our
spirit that we are children of God, and if
children, then heirsheirs of God and
fellow heirs with Christ, provided we
suffer with him in order that we may also
be glorified with him. - Romans 8:17
To many Christians fail to focus on the benefit
of salvation and therefore, have lost the joy
when the inheritance on earth is affected.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is
honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever
is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any
excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think
about these things. What you have learned and received
and heard and seen in mepractice these things, and
the God of peace will be with you. - Philippians 4:8-9
2. JESUS gives us eternity
and future glory with HIM.
(v.6-7)
In this you rejoice, though now for a little
while, if necessary, you have been grieved by
various trials, so that the tested genuineness of
your faithmore precious than gold that
perishes though it is tested by firemay be
found to result in praise and glory and honor at
the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Trials or sufferings
comes in various shapes
and we cannot escape it.
2 Corinthians 4:17-18
For this light momentary affliction is
preparing for us an eternal weight of
glory beyond all comparison, as we
look not to the things that are seen but
to the things that are unseen. For the
things that are seen are transient, but
the things that are unseen are eternal.
Blessed are you when others revile
you and persecute you and utter all
kinds of evil against you falsely on
my account. Rejoice and be glad, for
your reward is great in heaven, for so
they persecuted the prophets who
were before you. - Matthew 5:11-12
Revelation 2:10
Do not fear what you are about to
suffer. Behold, the devil is about to
throw some of you into prison, that
you may be tested, and for ten days
you will have tribulation. Be
faithful unto death, and I will give
you the crown of life.
3. GODs sovereignty
transcends over our trials
and sufferings
Knowing the sovereignty of GOD change
the way we view this life
GOD is in control and nothing happens
by accident or chance
In him we have obtained an
inheritance, having been predestined
according to the purpose of him who
works all things according to the
counsel of his will, - Ephesians 1:11
And we know that for those who love
God all things work together for good,
for those who are called according to
his purpose. - Romans 8:28
He wont give us
what we cant bear.
It is for discipline that you have to endure.
God is treating you as sons. For what son is
there whom his father does not discipline? -
Hebrews 12:7
No temptation has overtaken you that is
not common to man. God is faithful, and he
will not let you be tempted beyond your
ability, but with the temptation he will also
provide the way of escape, that you may be
able to endure it. - 1 Corinthians 10:13
5 Reasons why trials
would be necessary
1. To turn us away from sin
That is why many of you are weak and ill,
and some have died. But if we judged
ourselves truly, we would not be judged. But
when we are judged by the Lord, we are
disciplined so that we may not be condemned
along with the world. - 1 Corinthians 11:30-32
2. Protect us from sinning
So to keep me from becoming conceited
because of the surpassing greatness of the
revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh,
a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me
from becoming conceited. - 2 Corinthians
12:7
3. To grow in character
If you are left without discipline, in which
all have participated, then you are
illegitimate children and not sons. - Hebrews
12:8
4. To further equip us for the ministry
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all
comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that
we may be able to comfort those who are in any
affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves
are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in
Christ's sufferings, so through Christ we share
abundantly in comfort too. If we are afflicted, it is for
your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted,
it is for your comfort, which you experience when
you patiently endure the same sufferings that we
suffer. - 2 Corinthians 1:3-6
5. To test our faith (v.7)
Faith is compared and contrast with
gold.
Ores runs over refiners fire to see
whether if it is true on not and those who
melt/ evaporate early is not real, just as how
trials effects on a believers faith.
How do we know if we have
genuine faith?
As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is
the one who hears the word and immediately
receives it with joy, yet he has no root in
himself, but endures for a while, and when
tribulation or persecution arises on account of
the word, immediately he falls away. -
Matthew 13:20-21
This is what I get
from serving
CHRIST?
Peter vs. Judas
Both denied CHRIST when tested
through trials
Peter came back because he had a
genuine faith
Judas never returned
