INTRODUCTION
 Human brain is the most valuable creation of God. Man
is called intelligent because of the brain. But the
knowledge of a brain is lost when the body is destroyed
after the death .

 “BLUE BRAIN”- The name of the world’s first virtual

brain. That means a machine that
can function as human brain.

3
WHAT IS BLUE BRAIN?

 It would be the world’s first virtual brain.

 Within 30 years, we will be able to scan ourselves into the

computers.

 Is it really possible to create a human brain? - “YES", The

IBM is now developing a virtual brain known as the
BLUE BRAIN.

4
HISTORY AND RESEARCH
The project was founded in May 2005 by Henry
Markram at the EPFL( École polytechnique fédérale de
Lausanne) in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The primary machine used by the Blue Brain Project is

a ”Blue Gene” supercomputer built by IBM.

IBM, in partnership with scientists at Switzerland’s

EPFL and Brain and Mind Institute will begin simulating
the brain’s biological systems.
VIRTUAL BRAIN AND ITS NEED
VIRTUAL BRAIN:
 A machine that can function as brain
 It can take decision.
 It can think.
 It can give response.
 It can keep things in memory.

6
NEED OF VIRTUAL BRAIN:

 To upload contents of the natural brain into it .

 To keep the intelligence , knowledge and skill of any person

for ever .

 To remember things without any effort .

7
OBJECTIVES
 The project will search for insights into how
human beings think and remember.

 To cure the Parkinson's disease.

 The brain circuitry is in a complex state of

flux, the brain rewiring itself every moment
of its existence. If the scientists can crack
open the secret of how and why the brain
does it, the knowledge could lead to new
breed of supercomputers.
8
FUNCTIONS OF NATURAL BRAIN

 Sensory Input :-
Receiving input such as sound ,image, etc
through sensory cell .

9
 Interpretation:-
Interpretation of the received input by the
brain by defining states of neurons in the brain.

Motor Output:-
Receiving of electric responses from the brain to
perform any action .

HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE
REQUIRMENT S
 A Super computer.(Eg:Blue Gene)
 Memory with a very large storing capacity.(16TB
in BG)
 Processor with a very high processing power.(32
processor in BG)
 A very wide network.
 A program to convert the electric impulses from
the brain to input signal, which is to be received
by the computer and vice versa.

13
 Very powerful Nanobots to act as the interface
between the natural brain and the computer.

14
BUILDING VIRTUAL BRAIN
There are 3 main steps to building the virtual brain:

1. DATA ACQUISITION:
 Data acquisition involves taking brain slices, placing
them under a microscope, and measuring the shape and
electrical activity of individual neurons.
 Behaviour of neurons is studied using a 12 patch
clamp instrument

2. SIMULATION:
The primary software used by the BBP for neural
simulations is a package called NEURON(in
C,C++,FORTRAN).
3. VISUALIZATION:
RT Neuron is the primary application used by the BBP for
visualization of neural simulations.

The software was developed internally by the BBP team. It

is written in C++ and OpenGL.

 RT Neuron takes the output from Hodgkin-Huxley

simulations in NEURON and renders them in 3D.
UPLOADING HUMAN BRAIN

 The uploading is possible by the

use of small robots known as the
nanobots.

 Will monitor activity of brain by

traveling into the spine and brain
and scan the structure of our
brain, providing a complete
readout of the connection.

 They will provide an interface

with computer .

UTILISATION-APPLICATION

A very good example of utilization of blue brain is the case

"short term memory".

 An another situation is that when a person gets older,

then he starts forgetting or takes a bit more time to
recognize to a person.

Gathering and Testing 100 Years of Data

A Novel Tool for Drug Discovery for brain disorders.

ADVANTAGES
 We can remember things without any effort.
 Decision can be made without the presence of a
person.
 Even after the death of a man his intelligence
can be used.
 The activity of different animals can
be understood.
 Help people with impaired hearing.

20
DISADVANTAGES
 We become dependent upon the computer
systems.
 Others may use technical knowledge against us.
 Computer viruses will pose an increasingly critical
threat.

21
NEXT STEPS

 An effort will be dedicated to reconstructions and

simulations on a larger scale than neural micro-circuitry.

 A very large part of BBP activity is dedicated to

engineering: developing and operating the software tools,
the workflows and the supercomputing capabilities
required to digitally reconstruct and simulate the brain
and to analyse and visualize the results.
CONCLUSION

 Very soon this technology will be

highly accepted whole over the
world but wisdom lies in right use.

 “Technology does not create Brain

but Brain creates Technology”

 We will be able to transfer ourselves

into computers at some point & this
is just the beginning!
