Exam Technique
This is an example of a part 7 task. There are 12 points available in this part, 2 for each correct
answer. Depending on how difficult you find this part decide how much time to give yourself
15/20 minutes.
Text Preparation
Text preparation involves looking for “anchors” in the text
either side of the gaps and in the missing paragraphs.
Anchors are words that give us information about their
location in a text, they could be:
• Pronouns: he / she / it / this / that etc.
• Possessive adjectives: his / her / its etc.
• Linkers: So, however, but, then, afterwards etc.
• Other reference words / parts of structures: too / either /
parts of conditionals / comparisons.
Let’s look at some examples. Look at the text around the
first gap. Underline any anchors you find.
Underline the anchors. Now look at the paragraphs for the
corresponding information.
In this one we have loads of anchors!
Now in pairs look for anchors in the text
next to the rest of the gaps.
Sometimes there aren’t any anchors in the
text, as we see in gap 12. However, by finding
anchors for all the other gaps it makes it easier
to eliminate other paragraphs.
