Gene Therapy

What is Gene Therapy?

● Gene therapy is used to treat and stop diseases.

● Years from now, medical practitioners can use the

treatment to reduce the risks of diseases.
Why do we use Gene Therapy?
Researchers are trying to learn the best
way to do gene therapy. One thing they are
trying is taking out mutated genes that
make people sick and putting in good genes
to save people's lives.
The history of Gene Therapy
Stanfield Rogers first proposed gene
therapy which replaced good DNA with
defective in 1970. This therapy was also a
treatment for many types of diseases.

Ashanti DeSilva was a 4 year old child with
an inherited disease that used gene
therapy. The therapy was founded in 1990.
Research Question
Scientist believes the gene therapy will
enhance certain human traits but is this an
ethical practice?
Controversy
The negative aspects are those things I
touched on in the beginning. Safety issues
with the research, cheating our nature, and
possible discrimination are the things to
watch out for there.
Continued..
There are many positive aspects as well. If
research is successful, this type of thing
could cure many diseases and save lives.
Answer to this Question
Well, it seems to me that the largest issues here have to
do with safety and possibly discrimination between
different groups of people. Another issue is that gene
therapy can help us "cheat" nature by strengthening things
like brain power or physical strength. With these reasons,
the gene therapy is unethical.
Pros
● Possibility to cure many diseases and
save lives.
● Improved quality of life.
● Possibility of eradicating problems for
future generations in a family gene pool.
Cons
● Research and early procedures can be
dangerous.
● People of different races and financial
backgrounds could discriminated against
due to people wanting the “best” genes.
Cons
● Can be considered “cheating” nature.
Example: Better brain power and
athleticism just because of therapy
instead of hard work.
● Can be considered “against God.”
