WHAT IS AUTOMATION ?
So the first thing which strikes up in our mind is what is
automation ?
Beginning with the basics, Automation is the
technology by which a process or a procedure is
performed without human assistance.
Automation control is the use of various control systems
for operating equipments such as machinery process,
process in factories etc. Automation is evolving quickly
and business intelligence in applications is a new form of
high-quality automation. In the technology domain, the
impact of automation is increasing rapidly, both in the
software/hardware and machine layer. However,
despite advances in automation, some manual
intervention is always advised, even if the tool can
perform most of the tasks.
MERITS AND DEMERITS OF AUTOMATION
MERITS DEMERITS
• Reduction in production time. • Large initial investment.
• Increase in accuracy and • Less versatility.
repeatability. • Increase in unemployment.
• Less human error. • Unpredictable costs.
• Less employee costs. • Bespoke automation becomes
• Higher volume production. redundant when production
processes change.
TYPES OF
AUTOMATION

• Building Automation - lifts, smoke

detector etc.
• Scientific Automation - rocket
launching etc.
• Industrial Automation - automated
bottle filling , steel factories etc.
• Office Automation - printers, cctv
cameras etc.
• Light Automation - street solar
lightening etc.

Control Control

The use of computerised or robotic devices to complete manufacturing tasks.

WHAT IS PLC?
• PLC stands for “Programmable Logic Controller” invented by Dick Morley in
1968, which are static industrial device through which we perform sequential
as well as logical operations.
• A PLC has a built in operating system(OS). This OS is highly specialised to
handle incoming events in real time, or at the time of their occurrence.
• PLC is a digital computer designed for multiple inputs and output
arrangements, extended temperature ranges , immunity electrical noise, and
resistance to vibration and impact. A PLC is an example of a real time system.
• It uses programmable memory to store the instructions and specific functions
that include On/Off control, timing counting, sequencing, arithmetic and data
handling.

MODES IN PLC :
• Power Mode – The Power Mode glows till the
PLC is being powered up.
• Run Mode - The run mode is used to execute the
user program. Input devices are monitored and
output devices are energized accordingly. After
entering all instruction to a PLC program, the
processor is put into run mode.
• Program Mode - The mode in which new
programs are entered. The program mode also
used to edit or update existing program and
used to upload, download files, document
program (print out). When the PLC is switched
into the program mode, all outputs from the PLC
are forced off regardless of their rung logic
status, and the ladder I/O scan sequence is
halted.
MODES IN PLC (CONTD.)
• Test Mode - This feature is often used after
developing or editing a program to test the
program execution before allowing the PLC to
operate real-world outputs. Without
energizing any output a new or modified
program is tested with the inputs.
• Remote Mode - The Remote position gives
remote access to a PLC to select the program
and run mode by a personal computer
connected to the PLC processor. The remote
mode may be beneficial when the controller is
in a location that is not easily accessible.
